Round 19 Result:
Hawthorn Hawks: Win over Fremantle, 53 – 112
Essendon Bombers: Win over Sydney, 109 – 66
Old rivals Hawthorn and Essendon will battle it out once again at the mighty MCG this Saturday.
After many years of squabbling and fighting in the past, great anticipation has been built for this week’s do-or-die clash.
Earlier in the season when the Hawks and Bombers went head-to-head, it was the Hawks who were victorious. A healthy 23-point margin separated the two back in May.
As we enter the business end of the season, many matches have suddenly rose in significance, and this is no exception.
If the Bombers win, they become one step closer to making finals. The same goes for the Hawks, who are currently in the top eight, but need wins in order to hold their spot.
Recent form has been a massive factor when tipping matches in the past fortnight. Essendon will enter the match with a three-win streak and a record of eight wins from its last 10 matches, making the Bombers one of the hottest teams throughout the land.
Hawthorn sit in a similar situation, winning six of its past eight, whilst also winning by an average of 65-points in the last two weeks.
Picking a winner for this match will be very difficult. Both sides are on the rise and expect to make finals, both sides are in good form as of late, and both sides can turn it on at any time to win even the toughest of games.
Here are our tips for the big clash between the Hawthorn Hawks and the Essendon Bombers.
Hawthorn Hawks vs. Essendon Bombers Round 20 – First to Tips
First to 15 Points
Essendon Bombers @ $1.84
The Essendon asset which scares its opposition the most is the ability to move the ball very quickly from one end of the field to the other. The Bombers have form early in matches and could catch the Hawks napping early in this one, which is why they will be the first team to 15 points.
First to 50 Points
Essendon Bombers @ $1.82
Last week, when the Bombers played the Swans, it was pleasantly surprising to see the Dons play well for the entire match. With this in mind, placing this bet is much safer than you would initially think. The Hawks took until the second half to put the Dockers into the ground last week — their start to the match wasn’t the smoothest of rides. This supports the idea that the Dons will be first to 50 because they are able to start better and have shown they can keep it up for an entire match.
Hawthorn Hawks vs. Essendon Bombers Round 20 – Player Specials Tips
Jaeger O’Meara to get 25 disposals @ $1.55
In the match against the Dockers last week, it was Tom Mitchell who enjoyed 42 touches, but just under him on the stat sheet read Jaeger O’Meara with 33 disposals. If Jaeger can stay in form for another match, he should easily be able to get above 25 touches. In the match back in round seven, O’Meara was still recovering from his knee and making his way back into full-time footy, but it didn’t stop him from getting 22 touches, which gives us plenty of confidence he will accumulate over 25.
Last week’s match was not the highest for disposals, as the Swans would normally negate the influence of all the midfielders, but it was Essendon captain Dyson Heppell who had 31, which was the most on the ground. Dyson will bring that form into this match and be able to find the footy over 30 times.
Hawthorn Hawks vs. Essendon Bombers Round 20 – Total Match Points Tip
Total match points 172.5 Over/Under
Over @ $1.90
Both Hawthorn and Essendon scored over 100 in last round’s matches, if the Hawks and Dons could both score highly this week, it would make for a great match, but it would also be a very believable scenario. After the past month of football, which has been filled with mainly higher scoring games, it is very possible for the Hawks and Dons to conclude with well over 170-points across both teams.
Hawks vs. Bombers Match Predictions
Match Result: Essendon Bombers to Win @ $1.81
Line Betting: Essendon Bombers – 2.5 @ $1.92
This could easily be the best match that round 20 has to offer. It will be close with the Bombers only just scraping over the line when the final siren rings.
