The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, April 22, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Hawkesbury Race 10: #12 Estadio Mestalla @ $3.60

We’ll have to wait for the final race on the Hawkesbury card for our best bet, but we’re confident it’ll be worth the wait. Estadio Mestalla makes his return from a 105-day spell, and after a strong initial Australian campaign, we only expect him to get better this preparation. He’s got an unblemished record when first-up with two starts for two wins, and after two barrier trials suggesting he’s primed for first-up success, we think he can replicate his feat from November 16. His debut win in Australia caught everyone’s attention, and he went on to win again and found the minor money on another occasion to make a strong impression for punters, starting favourite in all his four starts. He’ll be starting favourite again here and it’s easy to see why. Joao Moreira gets the steer this time and Estadio Mestalla will be getting back from barrier three; however, with just 54.5kg on his back for the rise in grade from last preparation, he looks beautifully placed by Chris Waller to secure his fourth career win.

Mornington Race 4: #7 Convener @ $2.40

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Convener was the definition of a good thing licked at Sandown last time out and we expect the former European will right those wrongs on Saturday. The four-year-old was held up for a run until the final 200m on his Australian debut before powering home late to go down by a narrow margin to Saint Bathans. There is no doubt, with clear air he wins that race. Clear air should not be an issue for the son of Almanzor on Saturday having drawn barrier 13. Blake Shinn will have this bloke settled in the second half of the field and with a well-timed sprint, Convener should simply prove a class above this lot over 2000m.

Doomben Race 5: #12 Sweet Margot May @ $3.60

Sweet Margot May, trained by Robert Heathcote, is looking to win back-to-back races for the first time in her 11-race career after dominating her rivals first-up in the Military Rose Plate at this track and distance on March 18. This four-year-old mare is a horse on the rise, and she appears to be ready to take the next step this preparation, so another win this Saturday should raise her rating and allow her to compete in better races during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. This daughter of I Am Invincible will stay at 1110m and will be ridden by Ben Thompson, who won on her last start, bringing his record to two wins and a third from three rides. Thompson should be able to settle Sweet Margot May in the middle of the field from barrier five, and if she finds clear air in the final 200m, she will be letting down with her trademark turn of foot to pick up the leaders in the final 50m.

Morphettville Race 5: #5 Starts With Hello @ $2.90

Our best bet of the day comes halfway through the program when the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained Starts With Hello hunts for win number three at start seven. The four-year-old gelding peaked on his run inside the final furlong over the Morphettville 1300m on March 13 when finding a couple a touch too strong late on. He steps back up to the 1400m, which is the track and trip that he was an impressive winner at two runs back when enjoying a cozy run throughout, before pouncing on the lead late. He draws to gain a similar run from barrier three under Jake Toeroek and if he replicates his efforts in recent times, Starts With Hello should just simply be winning this.

Ascot Race 1: #5 Rusty Dreams @ $2.20

Our best bet at Ascot will be in the first race, where the Michael Lane-trained Rusty Dreams will be looking to maintain her undefeated record in her fourth career start, following her dominant win at this track over 1400m last time out. This three-year-old filly will be stepping up to 1600m for the first time in her short career, and given her dominance in her most recent victory, the increase in distance should not be a concern for her, and she looks to be a very nice filly on the rise. This daughter of Universal Ruler prefers to settle on speed, so the race should be set up perfectly for her to jump and lead or settle in behind the leaders in the box seat. On Saturday, Chris Parnham will continue his strong association with this filly, and with Parnham riding her in all of her trials and races, we expect Rusty Dreams to have every opportunity to prove her class and improve her record to four from four.
