Both Melbourne and Richmond will be looking to get back on the winners’ list when they clash at the MCG on Monday night in round six of the 2023 AFL Premiership.

The Demons copped a reality check in round five when they were soundly beaten by the Bombers at Adelaide Oval. The key stat to emerge from a close set of numbers was Melbourne’s efficiency inside 50, which was a disappointing 43%. Wasteful ball-use in their forward arc almost certainly cost them the game.

The Demons comfortably won the clearances but could only manage nine marks up forward, leading to scrappy attacking forays that were largely cleaned up by the Essendon defence. The other key stat was the tackle count, which the Bombers won 71-55 thanks to their greater intensity around the ball.

The Richmond Tigers suffered their third loss of the season in round five and do not appear a top-eight side at this stage of the season. The Tigers are afflicted by the competition’s longest injury list and appear hard pressed to field a competitive squad.

Richmond struggled to kick a winning total against the Swans and have only posted a single score over 85 points across five rounds. The ongoing absence of spearhead Tom Lynch to a long-term foot injury will only further hamper their scoring ability.

Melbourne Demons star Clayton Oliver continues to dominate the centre of the field whenever he slips on a football guernsey. He amassed 41 disposals, nine clearances, and two tackles in the loss to the Bombers, despite being well held early in the game. Club sources advise that after an enormous off-season Oliver leads the Melbourne squad in several fitness categories, including core strength. This allows him to shrug tackles and burst through traffic when other players would succumb to defensive pressure.

Richmond midfielder Jacob Hopper has stepped up his efforts in a depleted side and was among the best on ground against the Swans. The former Giant grabbed 32 disposals, five clearances, and five tackles in a valiant attempt to lift the Tigers. Hopper has missed a stack of football due to a knee injury but looks in career-best form at this point of the season.

Melbourne v Richmond Rd 6 betting strategy

Melbourne go into this contest as hot favourites with the early line set at a healthy 21.5 points, which makes sense given Richmond’s inability to kick enough points to date. There is a strong chance the Demons get on top early and then run away with this contest in the latter stages. Richmond’s form looks brittle and may get exposed by a side that knows how to bring the pain.
