Friday night basketball continues with a blockbuster NBL clash in Perth as the Wildcats host the South East Melbourne Phoenix at RAC Arena. These clubs have travelled on entirely different trajectories so far this season; the Wildcats have lost their last two matches after winning the previous three, while the Phoenix come into this match in red-hot form having followed three losses with back-to-back wins.

The last time the Wildcats took to the court was in Tasmania, where they were belted by a very balanced JackJumpers outfit. The JackJumpers had five players scoring in double digits, with four of those being starters, as the Wildcats lost by a whopping 31 points.

The Phoenix delivered a very similar style of defeat to the Breakers in their last match. Gary Browne couldn’t stop dishing out assists as five players, including captain Mitch Creek, registered double-figure points tallies as SEM beat the Breakers by 22.

The Wildcats do come into this match as favourites, and rightly so given what they have done for a majority of this young season. However, the success of the Wildcats seems to hinge solely on the output of Bryce Cotton. This makes them an unreliable betting prospect, and the balance of the Phoenix side is much more appealing. Should the Phoenix put on another well-rounded show, they can certainly win this match as $2.40 outsiders.

A typical Phoenix win this season has been dependent on their perimeter defence – especially in their last match against the Breakers, when they limited Izayah Le’Afa to 3/17 shooting from the field. The defence will be led by former NBA players Ryan Broekhoff and Creek, who will have Cotton as their main Wildcat to shut down. Should the Phoenix put on a strong defensive display, the points total will fall below the 169.5 line.

It will be the combination of Broekhoff and Creek that will lead this Phoenix side to a win with the support of Browne. Broekhoff and Creek can score from anywhere on the court while also being able to create offense around them for their teammates. If the Phoenix are going to win this match, they will surely be the team with the highest-scoring quarter of the match, which is paying $2.20 at BetOnline.

Key matchup: Ryan Broekhoff vs Bryce Cotton

Bryce Cotton has already showed on multiple occasions this season he is one of, if not the most elite scorer in the NBL. Ryan Broekhoff checks in at guard for the Phoenix, but when playing for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA he was more of a small forward. Broekhoff should have a size and length advantage on Cotton that, coupled with a high basketball IQ, will make scoring very difficult for the Perth star. This would be a great matchup to watch on the court.
