The Sydney Sixers will commence their title defence this Sunday at the SCG when they face the Melbourne Stars in the opening game of the 2021/22 Big Bash League season.
The Sixers come into the campaign as $4 favourites in the BBL outright odds, and it is hard to argue with the market after two consecutive titles for the men in pink.
Many familiar faces return for the Sydneysiders this season, including stalwarts such as Moises Henriques and the in-form Jordan Silk as well as young guns like Jack Edwards and Josh Philippe, while Chris Jordan joins England teammates Tom Curran and James Vince on the roster.
The Stars also bring a familiar-looking squad into BBL11, with Glenn Maxwell leading an experienced crop that includes Australian internationals Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa.
Joe Burns joins the Melburnian side’s batting lineup after moving down from the Brisbane Heat, while the hard-hitting Joe Clarke comes over from the UK for his first taste of Big Bash cricket.
The Stars finished seventh last season, yet the top cricket betting sites have them on the third line of the BBL outright market at $6, while they are even money to knock off the defending champs this weekend.
Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars betting predictions
To score 30+ runs: Josh Philippe
This kid is a rising star of Australian cricket and could work his way into the national white-ball setup with another strong Big Bash campaign. Philippe scored over 500 runs last season, finishing third in the BBL10 batting charts, and we are backing him to make a solid start with 30 or more this Sunday.
Josh Philippe 30+ runs
Stars top wicket-taker: Adam Zampa
Australia’s no.1 leg-spinner was exceptional at the T20 World Cup and probably should have been named Player of the Tournament ahead of David Warner. Zampa brought that form back to domestic white-ball cricket with 2/44 in NSW’s win against Victoria on November 24, so there is no reason to bet against him topping the bowling figures for the Stars this weekend.

Match result: Sydney Sixers
BBL results are tough to pick at the best of times, let alone in the first week of the season, but the Sixers look to have an edge in this one. Most of the side that won the last two Big Bash titles is still intact, so why go against a winning formula?
