The last placed Adelaide Strikers will face the league leaders Perth Scorchers at the Adelaide Oval on Friday in an early game of the Big Bash League which starts at 10.40 AM.

The Scorchers have won 9 out of 11 games so far this season and the Strikers have won just 2 out of their 10 games so far this season. This demonstrates the vast gap in form between these two teams and while the home ground advantage which is worth 10% in my estimation, this will not be enough to make up for the very tough challenge the Adelaide Strikers face.

The drop in pitch should offer plenty of bounce for the batters who love to cut and pull the ball and this will be a dangerous game for the bowler who can’t get their length right.

The Perth Scorchers are in great form after their 5 wicket win over the Sydney Sixers on Sunday and with the finals just a few games away, perhaps playing such weak opposition at this stage might make them think BBL cricket is all too easy. I’m sure the coach Adam Voges will correct that assumption.

The only query is that the spinner Peter Hatzoglou has kept it tight most of the time without breaking through for a big game. They’ve kept their squad intact through the Covid mess that has struck the BBL and their body language and attitude looks outstanding. They’ll be at unbackable odds for this game and they thoroughly deserve the compliment.

The Adelaide Strikers seem to be well out of their depth in this game but somehow they’ll have to find a way to put in a professional performance. Jonathan Wells scored 68 on Monday but they still managed to lose by 5 wickets. The lack of firepower with their bowlers has been the main reason for their decline this season and perhaps only Rashid Khan and Peter Siddle are capable of taking wickets on a regular basis for them.

Of course their fielding needs to be improved ASAP and this should at least help them avoid the wooden spoon this season.

This looks like a completely lopsided contest and it will be hard to find any real value in the result market. The Perth Scorchers start as very hot favourites and they should consolidate their league leader status. The conditions will suit the Perth Scorchers and the fact that this game will be played partly during the morning should mean that the side that wins the toss should bowl first in order to avoid the heat and to take advantage of any dew that remains on the wicket at that time. But the sheer gap in class between the two teams will tell the tale.

Online bookmakers have the Strikers as $2.55 outsiders, whilst the Perth Scorchers are at a $1.53 quote to continue on their winning ways in BBL11.

Player of the Match: Matthew Kelly

The prime interest in this game will come from the individual performances and there’s plenty to consider with Matthew Kelly. He took 4 for 25 on Tuesday and he has taken wickets in every match he has played so far this season in the BBL. Perhaps he doesn’t get the headlines that other players get but this right arm medium pacer has garnered respect through being consistent and keeping a level head in pressure situations. He’ll present a tough challenge for the Adelaide Strikers.
