Sportsbet slash odds for Dangerfield Brownlow and Geelong flag

Punters are backing Patrick Dangerfield to win his first Brownlow Medal in 2016, while Hawthorn is no longer the outright premiership favourite with sportsbet.com.au.

After his 43 possession game on Monday, the online bookie has cut Dangerfield’s odds for the Brownlow from $9 into $6 equal favourite, joining Gary Ablett on the first line of betting.

Sportsbet is now holding more money on Dangerfield to win the Brownlow Medal than the other top 10 favourites in the market combined, including Gary Ablett. Further pushing the former Crows ace’s chances are there are few proven vote-getters at his new club barring skipper Joel Selwood.

Hawthorn, who was the $4 premiership favourite heading into the opening round, has drifted to $5, joining West Coast on $5 at the head of the premiership betting market. The Hawks have major injury concerns with star utility Jarryd Roughead unlikely to be seen until the mid-point of the season, while captain Luke Hodge has a broken arm and will miss at least a fortnight.

Geelong’s 30 point win against the reigning premier has seen its odds narrow from $9 into $6 to win the flag. They will face a desperate GWS team which was a shock loser to big improver Melbourne in round 1. The Cats are currently $1.42 favourite to defeat the Giants ($2.85).

Collingwood had been as short as $15 with some bookmakers for the flag, but have drifted out to $26 after their disastrous showing against Sydney. The Pies captain, Scott Pendlebury, has also blown out to $26 in Brownlow betting after he was barely sighted against the Swans.

West Coast remain the best backed side in premiership betting, but Geelong is not far behind with Sportsbet now holding more money on the Cats than the Hawks after Monday’s game.

“Patrick Dangerfield’s performance against Hawthorn has convinced punters he can win his first Brownlow Medal in 2016 and that Geelong’s premiership window has well and truly re-opened,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Ben Bulmer.
