The top of table Perth Scorchers (7-1) are set to “host” the Melbourne Stars (3-3) at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night as the Big Bash League train rolls on.

Perth suffered their first defeat of BBL11 on Tuesday night when falling to the Sydney Thunder by 34 runs in a match they were never really in from the start.

Despite having the Thunder openers dismissed in the powerplay, a 113 run third wicket partnership between Jason Sangha and Sam Billings ripped the game away from the previously undefeated Scorchers. The Scorchers will be rueing the fact they activated Lance Morris as an X-Factor replacement when taking out Peter Hatzoglou. Morris only bowled 1.3 overs going for 0/16, with Hatzoglou going for just three runs off his single over.

Having been set 7/200, the Scorchers were on the back foot from the start, when they found themselves 3/17 at the end of the Powerplay. Against the Stars on Thursday, Perth will be looking to the likes of opening batsman Josh Inglis who has struggled for runs or to Mitchell Marsh who despite being dismissed for 6 on Tuesday is in career best form.

The Melbourne Stars will be confident of causing an upset against the ladder leaders, considering the fight and versatility they showed against the Brisbane Heat on Monday night. With Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell struggling against the Heat, it was left to opening batsman Joe Clark (85) and Hilton Cartwright (79) to help boost the Stars to 9/207.

With Andre Russell leaving to fulfil international duties, the Stars will be needing more out of the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Beau Webster with the bat at the end of the innings. With the twin spin duo of Qais Ahmed and Adam Zampa seemingly a perfect duo for tight bowling in T20 cricket and the ever-improving Brody Couch with the ball, this Stars side has what it takes to upset the Scorchers and hand them consecutive defeats.

There is little surprise to see the Scorchers are a $1.62 favourite for Thursday’s clash, but if Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell can fire with the bat, then the $2.31 on offer for the Stars may present great value in Big Bash betting.

Top Perth Scorchers Run Scorer: Colin Munro

In the lead up to the Scorchers clash with the Stars, Colin Munro has managed scores of 58* & 64* in convincing fashion to show he is somewhat near his best once again. It is seemingly either 50’s or bugger all for Munro with those two unbeaten half centuries sitting alongside a score of 114*. However, he has scores of 0, 3 & 9 to his name but we expect the Kiwi to take advantage of the short square boundaries at Marvel and send the Stars bowlers to all parts of the ground. If he can get through his opening 10 balls, then we expect to see Munro top the run sheet for the Scorchers.

Top Perth Scorchers Wicket Taker: Jason Behrendorff

Jason Behrendorff has nine wickets from seven match thus far in BBL11, but ultimately has not been at his absolute best. He has hauls of 3/22 & 2/19, but we feel like the big lefty has plenty left in the tank and could cause headaches for the Stars vulnerable top order. He is dynamic with the new ball, with the ability to swing the ball both ways. With Stoinis, Joe Burns and several other Stars batsman struggling, we expect “Dorff” to pick up a few poles along the way on Thursday night.
