Eagle Farm Race 3: #10 Political Debate @ $2.00
The Chris Waller-trained Political Debate needs to win or finish second to gain a start in next weekend’s Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) – a race that he is currently favourite for. The colt by So You Think has looked brilliant in his two starts to date, finishing in the minor money on both occasions. Last start in the Spirit Of Boom Classic, the Coolmore-owned galloper got a long way back over 1200m and made up a tonne of ground along the inside, dead-heating for third before running away from the leaders past the post. He is bred to be a serious horse over a mile and potentially 2000m, so we are expecting to see him take care of this field over 1500m on Saturday. James McDonald stays with him, they’ve drawn barrier three and will get every chance to win. There’s something about this horse that reminds us of Press Statement and dare we say it, The Autumn Sun.
Flemington Race 3: #4 Americain Angel @ $6.00
The Danny O’Brien-trained Americain Angel is as honest a mare as you could hope for, and we are anticipating she will get her winter campaign off to a winning start. The four-year-old boasts a record of 13: 3-7-1, so there is no doubt she has proven to be a costly conveyance for backers. However, two of her three wins have come on rain-affected going, including a win over 1400m, the trip she resumes at on Saturday. She has not missed the top two in four starts on wet tracks (4: 2-2-0) and has three runner-up efforts to her name when resuming from a spell. Add in Jamie Kah sticking on board and it is hard to go past Americain Angel as the best bet of the day.

Rosehill Race 9: #14 Wicklow @ $3.40
We wouldn’t be shocked if we are talking about Wicklow on a large scale in the spring, with the Chris Waller import showing glimpses of Group potential in his first racing preparation on Australian soil. The four-year-old gelding won his first three starts in Australia, defeating Crystal Pegasus – a two-time Listed winner this campaign – by 1.6 lengths in June. Wicklow ran third at his next start as favourite, and he wasn’t seen again until a recent trial in May, where he was given a quiet time of it under James McDonald. Drawn the inside alley, Jason Collett will have him midfield with cover, and given the heavy conditions, we are confident that the runs will come in the straight.
Morphettville Race 3: #9 Totally Discreet @ $4.00
Fresh off a six-month spell, we are hoping the Phillip Stokes-trained Totally Discreet can kick off her winter campaign with a win in this 1000m scamper. She has trialled up a treat in the run in to this, having put close to three lengths on her rivals at Balaklava on May 26. She draws barrier one for this assignment, so we expect Jason Holder to have her positioned on the leaders’ heels throughout. The three-year-old filly will need luck at a crucial point, but if she is afforded clear running in the home straight, her turn of foot is the best in the race and should get the job done.
Belmont Race 6: #7 Savage One @ $4.00
Although Savage One has found one better in all five starts this preparation, the Adam Durrant-trained four-year-old is ready to win. The son of God Has Spoken was only narrowly beaten last start over 1400m at this track, but he drops 2kg from that and rises to the mile for the first time in his career which should suit. The in-form Clint Johnston-Porter will be in the saddle from barrier 11, so he will look to slot in somewhere in the first half of the field to ensure he is close enough at the business end. Savage One has only missed the placings twice in 13 starts, and he looks primed to make it win five on Saturday.
