Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for February 25, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, February 25, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Sandown Race 3: #5 Toregene @ $4.20

Our best bet of the day comes up in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes, where the Matthew Williams-trained Toregene returns from a three-month spell. The four-year-old mare may lack some of the class that her rivals bring to a race like this, but she has won four of her six starts and was only just gunned down by the smart My Whisper in the Summoned Stakes before going to the paddock. She is undefeated through two first-up runs and has won two of her three starts at 1400m to suggest she is perfectly placed here. In the small field of six, look for Dean Yendall to take luck out of the equation and have the Mongolian Khan mare leading the field up. With a cheap sectional or two, we anticipate Toregene will prove too hard to run down.

Randwick Race 4: #7 Glory Daze @ $2.80

Glory Daze looks one of the better bets on the Randwick program and we simply have to be with him in this 2000m BM88 contest. Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have this Irish import flying in his first Australian preparation and will be searching for back-to-back wins after a huge win second-up at Sandown. It was a perfect steer by Mark Zahra on February 4 when pinching runs up the inside running rail before holding off some late chargers like Threeeandfourpence. He’s third-up now and has fitness in his legs getting out to the 2000m this time in and looks like it shouldn’t be a problem at all for this son of Cotai Glory, particularly based on his sublime European form. He’s got credentials to Epsom Derby winner, Westover, and gallopers like Stone Age and Desert Crown prior to that. He’s an exceptional type and on his two runs in Australia should be unbeaten since his arrival. James McDonald hops aboard and from a soft draw we’d be shocked if Glory Daze wasn’t figuring strongly late in this one.

Doomben Race 2: #8 Coup De Tonnerre @ $3.90

Our best bet of the day at Doomben will come up in the second race as the Tony Gollan-trained Coup De Tonnerre will head to a Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2200m third-up, after running a nice third behind Kopangi over 1810m last start at Eagle Farm on February 18. This five-year-old gelding ended his spring preparation with two starts over 2200m, where he finished fourth and second, in a similar grade to what he will face on Saturday. After two solid runs to begin his autumn campaign, this son of Night Of Thunder should be hitting peak fitness and ready to win this weekend from a cosy barrier (2). Kyle Wilson-Taylor will retain the ride after having his first sit on this gelding last start, and if he can give him an identical ride on Saturday, we should see him record his fourth win over 2200m.

Morphettville Race 4: #7 Malinong Club @ $2.30

In the fourth, Malinong Club from the Dan Clarken & Oopy MacGillivray yard will be dropping back from the Listed Premier’s Plate to run in a Benchmark 64 Handicap over 2000m. This five-year-old mare finished just over three lengths off Farooq in the Premier’s Plate at her first Listed start, where she was far from disgraced. Now that she drops back in grade considerably, this race looks to set up perfectly for this daughter of Dedline over a distance that she has won at twice from six attempts. Lachlan Neindorf will retain the ride after the Premier’s Plate, and with the aid of his 1.5kg claim, this girl will get into the race with only 56kg, with only one of her rivals carrying a lighter weight. From barrier eight we expect to see Neindorf ride this mare how he did last start, but instead find the outside and prove too strong for this field in the concluding stages.

Ascot Race 3: #5 Burnya To Survive @ $2.30

The third race of the day will see Burnya To Survive from the Jason Miller yard return to the races in a RTG 72+ Handicap over 1200m after a two-month spell. This lightly race five-year-old gelding raced during the Perth Summer Carnival where he won both of his starts dominantly, showing that he was back to his best form after he was very underwhelming during his winter preparation last year. This son of Bradbury’s Luck has only been to the races nine times in his career, recording six wins and one placing. There will be four very speedy horses engaged in this race on Saturday, which should see it be run at a strong tempo setting up for this gelding who has a blistering turn of foot, running on from the back of the field. Clint Johnston-Porter will be looking for his first win on this guy at his second ride, and if he gets even luck and that hot tempo that is expected, he should be winning.
