Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for December 17, 2022
The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, December 17, 2022 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.
All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au
Eagle Farm Race 1: #1 Coco Rox @ $2.70
In the first race of the day, our best bet Coco Rox will be looking for her first win of the preparation as she will drop back to Benchmark 78 grade from Listed grade at the Gold Coast last start. Two Starts back, this four-year-old mare was beaten by the very smart I Am Me at Rosehill, however, she beat the rest of the field easily. With the aid of Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s 1.5kg claim, this girl will only have to carry 58kg, which is only 2.5kg more than she carried in Listed company last start. From barrier four this daughter of Better Than Ready should lob outside the leader or find the lead herself, if none of her rivals want to take it up. If she gets into a nice rhythm mid-race and doesn’t have to do much work, she should kick clear on the home corner and be too hard to run down.
Flemington Race 8: #1 Corner Pocket @ $4.40
We were with the Lindsey Smith-trained Corner Pocket when he resumed from a break at Pakenham on December 3 and despite finishing second, we are happy to butter up once again. The six-year-old has only ever tasted defeat once when second-up from a spell which was when chasing home Inspirational Girl and Zaaki in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes back in March. He managed to beat subsequent Group 1 winner Mr Brightside on that day and if he runs to that type of form here over 1400m, he simply wins this. From barrier 15 and with Thomas Stockdale sticking on board claiming 2kg, we expect to see Corner Pocket dictate terms throughout, kick away at the clock tower and prove too hard to run down. The $4.40 on offer with online bookmakers is an early Christmas present.
Ascot Race 4: #2 Bitofmerit @ $2.70
Our best bet of the day comes up in race four, where we will be siding with Bitofmerit from the Michael Campbell yard as she looks to record her fifth win at her sixth career start. First-up this preparation this daughter of Demerit raced out of her comfort zone and raced on-pace before idling past the leader and running away with a stylish victory over 1000m on November 26. This mare has only raced over 1200m once before in her career, which was the only time she was beaten, however, the track was softer than a Good that day and she didn’t enjoy the rain falling during the race resulting in a bad run overall. On Saturday she strikes a race second-up that is very winnable and with Lucy Warwick taking the ride again, she looks awfully hard to beat.

Randwick Race 10: #6 Frumos @ $2.00
It’s last chance material for this five-year-old mare in the final race of the Randwick card, with Frumos finding her way into our best bet yet again. She was unlucky again first up and never saw daylight when running in behind Ruby Tuesday on December 3 when beaten 1.6 lengths and jockey Kerrin McEvoy indicated post-race he had a lap full of horse still underneath him. She drew barrier one on that occasion and it eventuated to be her downfall, however, on Saturday there shouldn’t be any excuses from barrier six and the key booking of the in-form James McDonald taking the reins. The 1400m here looks ideal and with any luck in the run her form looks too strong for BM78 company particularly if key race rival Jewellery elects to accept for Canterbury on Friday night.
Gawler Race 8: #5 Texan Windstorm @ $3.40
John Macmillan brings his five-year-old gelding Texan Windstorm to the Gawler 1500m having strung together four straight wins. This will be his first go at 1500m and despite that query it is simply too hard to go past him in a BM72 affair like this. Ellis Wong sticks on board and with his natural early speed and the aid of Wong’s claim, Texan Windstorm should be in a prominent spot throughout, most likely settled outside Heir Of Tavistock. On the improving track and with just 56.5kg on his back, Texas Windstorm looks a clear best bet of the day out of Gawler.
