Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for August 20, 2022

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, August 20, 2022 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Randwick Race 2: #6 Monfelicity @ $3.60

The stayers get their chance in the second, with a couple of nice horses going around. We were with Monfelicity on the weekend that just went and she was one of many victims of bad luck, so we are happy to forgive and forget. The David Payne-trained mare steps straight out to 2400m which is going to suit her down to the ground, while a dry Randwick deck should also be to her liking given she won here first-up over the mile. The four-year-old by Vadamos is once again going to get the right run in transit from barrier two under William Pike, and with a bigger track and a more genuinely run race, we are confident that the runs will come when needed. The mare by Vadamos can hit back hard on Saturday, we are just getting a fifth of the price.

Moonee Valley Race 3: #3 Lackeen @ $3.00

Having smashed his rivals last time out at The Valley over 1600m, there looks to be no reason why the James Cummings-trained Lackeen cannot bring up consecutive victories at the track when he steps out over 1500m. The five-year-old gelding put 2.25 lengths on the smart Chief Altony last time out and if he runs up to that rating in a race like this, he looks to be a clear best bet of the day on Saturday. Craig Williams sticks on board which is a massive plus and despite most likely wanting to settle towards the rear of the field, Lackeen has the finishing burst to blow his rivals out of the water. The $3.30 on offer with some online bookmakers looks a perfect price to load into.

Doomben Race 7: #13 Merimee @ $2.70

We are going to turn a bit of a blind eye to the fact that Merimee has to jump from barrier 17, because we are confident she is going super and will win this. Trained by Chris Waller and to be ridden by James Orman, this four-year-old by Winning Rupert has superior form to that of her rivals. In March, she ran a terrific second behind Gypsy Goddess over 1600m in her last run for the prep, before resuming with a fast-finishing second behind Hatchet at Doomben over 1200m. Hatchet came out and won his next start by three lengths, while Merimee went back to the trials and did everything you would have wanted to see if you were an owner. The elephant in the room is the carpark barrier, but she goes back anyway and we’ve seen her come from last to win at Doomben in the past, so it isn’t that big of a deal. She’s had a trial between runs, so the rise to 1600m second-up doesn’t concern us, and Orman knows her well.

Murray Bridge Race 4: #7 Night Of Delight @ $3.30

Fresh off bolting in at Swan Hill under a relative hold in her first start for Tom Dabernig, Night Of Delight simply looks to be the best bet of the day on Saturday. She settled midfield during that win on August 7 and hit the front at the 200m mark, putting close to five lengths on her rivals in a truly dominant display. Despite the tricky draw in barrier seven, there looks to be enough early speed in the race to guarantee that the five-year-old mare gains cover upon settling. The race looks perfectly set-up for a sprinter armed with a strong finishing burst to charge over the top of some vulnerable leaders.

Belmont Race 7: #8 Advanced @ $2.05

There might not be much of a price around for Advanced, but his racing form and recent trial suggest he will be hard to beat first-up on Saturday. The Michael Grantham-trained four-year-old has only raced six times, but he already has two wins and a second to his name, with both victories coming on Soft tracks, so the Heavy 9 will be to his liking. Drawn the inside alley, the son of Playing God will be ridden positively by Patrick Carbery, while the light weight will help him skip through the ground. He’s a horse going places.
