Despite an iffy start to the 2022 AFL season, the Western Bulldogs are heavy favourites for their annual Good Friday clash with North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium in round five.

Based purely on recent form, the odds on this game should be much closer. North Melbourne are coming off a commendable away performance against Sydney where they pushed the Swans all the way, and there will be much talk of ‘green shoots’ at Arden Street this week. Whether they can string two solid games together remains to be seen, but the Kangaroos were the better side for much of the game against the favoured Swans.

The Bulldogs go into this match with a lowly 1-3 record and are performing way under consensus expectations. They’ve had a tough draw, but this is no excuse for a beaten grand finalist hoping to go one better. Their sole victory was a scratchy and inaccurate win over the Swans, and they were soundly beaten in round four by the Tigers. The loss against Richmond was also marred by inaccuracy, with the Dogs kicking an appalling 7.19, a statistic that might require the services of a sport psychologist.

The Dogs will need to get their season started soon if they are any hope of securing a coveted top-four spot. They are already 12 points adrift the reigning premiers and their season is slipping away. The Kangaroos will be quietly confident they can inflict further pain to the Dogs here, and if you agree, the online bookmakers are offering up huge odds for the upset.

Key matchup: Corr vs Naughton

Bulldogs full forward Aaron Naughton can help address the team’s goalkicking calamities with some long-overdue straight shooting. Having a forward that can convert with some reliability infuses confidence to the entire squad, and someone is going to have stand up for the beleaguered Dogs. We’re going to match Naughton up with Kangaroo key defender Aidan Corr, who was solid against the Swans and is averaging 16 possessions a game this season. If the Kangaroo defence can guard the centre, force their opponents to lead into the pockets, and apply enough ball pressure, the Dogs might be in for another lean night.

North Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs betting strategy

The early line for this game was set at a whopping 34.5 points. This has since trimmed into 32.5, but we are still going to step in and take it. The game will be played at Marvel Stadium, which will suit the Roos, and we are backing North Melbourne to show some fighting spirit here. The Dogs will probably regain their bite at some point, but with their indifferent form and goalkicking woes, we are confident this game will be decided by less than 32 points. The first quarter will be crucial, and if scores are close at that point, we can expect the Roos to hold their nerve and cover the line.

North Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs same-game multi tips

Building on our line bet – North Melbourne +32.5 – we’ll link it with Callum Coleman-Jones as an anytime goalkicker and Hugh Greenwood to grab 20+ possessions. Greenwood averages almost 18 touches per game this season, and we’re hoping he can get amongst the action against the Dogs.
