Jockey Ric McMahon’s decision to take an immediate suspension on a careless riding charge could reap benefits when he links again with Outraged at Ipswich on Saturday.

Trainer Kelly Schweida will saddle Outraged and Ruling Force in the City Of Ipswich Spring Stayers Cup (2150m) to start what could be a big seven days for him.

He will also have Shogun Sun in the Group One Golden Rose at Rosehill on Saturday and intends to run Cellargirl in the Group One Flight Stakes at Randwick on Saturday week.

But Schweida was keen to have McMahon aboard Outraged who seems to go best for the experienced jockey.

McMahon and Schweida were a lethal team for many years before McMahon got a hefty suspension in 2015.

He has struggled to regain a foot in in the metropolitan area since returning last year but is back riding plenty of winners.

McMahon won on Outraged at Doomben on September 9 but after riding another winner at Caloundra the next day he was sent out for 11 days on a careless riding charge.

In Queensland jockeys can have an automatic seven days stay which meant McMahon’s suspension was set to start on September 17 and finishing on September 28.

“However, he was keen to ride Outraged again and I was keen for him to have the mount,” Schweida said.

“Ric has a great record on Outraged having won four times on him including the Townsville Cup last year.

“He is a tricky horse to ride and you have to steer him the right way.

“Ric is making a real effort and I am happy to give him rides with chances.”
