England are set to welcome Germany to Wembley Stadium on Wednesday morning (AEST) in the round of 16 at Euro 2020. BettingSite brings you the best bets and match analysis for the 33rd encounter between these two fierce rivals.
England vs Germany match analysis
Gareth Southgate and his England side have endured mixed fortunes so far in Euro 2020. Despite getting through the group stage undefeated, the Three Lions have been far from convincing in any of their three matches at the tournament. With two 1-0 victories and a 0-0 draw to their name, the Brits will have to lift their game if they wish to go much deeper.
England are set to be without Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell due to COVID-19 protocols, which leaves Southgate short of a genuine left-back and an in-form creative midfielder. With Raheem Sterling being the only Englishman to score so far at Euro 2020, the Three Lions need their talisman Harry Kane to find the form that saw him net 23 goals for Tottenham during the English Premier League season.
Germany, on the other hand, have had quite an inconsistent start to Euro 2020 with a win, a draw and a loss in Group F. The tide looked to have turned when they defeated Euro 2016 champions Portugal 4-2 on Matchday 2, but all their good work was almost brought undone when they drew 2-2 with Hungary in Munich last week.
In the match against Hungary, the second-half introduction of Leon Goretzka proved pivotal as the Bayern Munich midfielder netted the equalising goal in the 84th minute. Goretzka’s impact off the bench has given Germany coach Joachim Löw something to think about, as neither Ilkay Gündoğan nor Toni Kroos were at their brilliant best during the the group stage.
England vs Germany predictions & best bets
Match winner: England
Despite having only scored two goals in three games, the Three Lions are yet to concede a goal in Euro 2020. Although they only managed a 1-0 win against the Czech Republic in their last match, England looked much stronger with Harry Maguire in defence and Jack Grealish added to the starting line-up. With Jordan Henderson providing great experience off the bench, and with Borussia Dortmund duo Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho bringing a youthful energy and some knowledge of German football, this English side has what it takes to get the better of their nemesis this time.
England to win
Anytime goalscorer: Raheem Sterling
Having scored both of England’s goals in Euro 2020, it is hard to fathom how odds of +280 are available for Raheem Sterling to score again on Wednesday. Sterling is always the butt of criticism when things are not going to plan for England, but the winger has shown his class throughout the tournament and will prove pivotal if the Brits wish to progress further. He will have his chances to find the back of the net; it is just a matter of whether he can show the same composure in the knockout phase as he did during the groups.
