Winx ruled out of international campaign

Winx
Connections have rejected invitations to race Winx overseas with the mare to stay in Australia.

An overseas trip for champion racemare Winx has been ruled out to concentrate on another Australian spring campaign.

Trainer Chris Waller ended months of speculation on Wednesday when said the world’s best thoroughbred would race on in Australia.

Pressure had been mounting on Waller and Winx’s connections to race the mare in the northern hemisphere after she had swept all before with 24 consecutive Australian wins since 2015.

“Winx has nothing to prove to anyone,” Waller said in a statement.

“She is and always will be regarded as a legend of the turf and it is champions like her who make up the fabric of this great sport.

“As her trainer, it is my responsibility to continually to carefully manage her career as it enters the twilight phase and this has seen in-depth dialogue between her owners and I as our joint decision was made.”

Winx will be trying to equal Black Caviar’s winning sequence of 25 when she contests the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 14.

Waller said connections had fielded invitations from many overseas racing jurisdictions, including organisers of the famous Royal Ascot carnival in England.

“It has been a dream to race a horse in front of Her Majesty the Queen at Royal Ascot, however this decision is not about us and must be based on the best interests of Winx,” Waller said.

Winx made it 24 wins in a row when she claimed the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill last Saturday.

The victory gave Winx a world record 17th Group One success.

Her rise as one of Australia’s best racehorses was completed in the lead-up to the George Ryder when she was rated equal best horse in the world on official rankings.

Winx is a prohibitive favourite to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes for the second year in a row and take her career prize money soaring towards $20 million.
