Wimbledon news, odds & multi tips for Monday, July 10
MIDDLE Sunday at the Wimbledon Championships is a blessing for some and a curse for others.
Who will come out firing in Monday’s round of 16 clashes?
The draw has thrown up one or two surprises.
Adrian Mannarino stunned Gael Monfils in the third round to join Kevin Anderson and Benoit Paire as the only unseeded men in the hunt.
Sam Querrey is on course to match last year’s run to the quarter finals after knocking out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga over five sets.
Nobody has troubled the ‘big four’ thus far, but Grigor Dimitrov will look to change that when he takes on Roger Federer.
The Swiss master is William Hill’s +200 outright favourite, ahead of Rafael Nadal (+275), Novak Djokovic (+350) and Andy Murray (+550).
Things are much murkier in the women’s draw.
Local lass Johanna Konta leads the pack at +500, but the big bolter in the field is Coco Vandeweghe.
Having started the tournament as an outside chance at best, the hard-hitting American has plunged into +700 despite drawing fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki.
Rounding out the chief contenders are Garbine Muguruza (+800) and Angelique Kerber (+900), but only one of them can progress to the quarters.
G Muguruza to defeat A Kerber – -161.29
C Vandeweghe to defeat C Wozniacki – -136.99
D Thiem to defeat T Berdych – -109.89
A Zverev to defeat M Raonic – +100

Angelique Kerber (1) vs. Garbine Muguruza (14)
Kerber is the world number one in the absence of Serena Williams, but she has not really looked it this year. The German scraped through to fourth round at the Australian Open and fell at the very first hurdle in the French. Muguruza has had some highs and lows in 2017, but she likes the grass and looks in fine form at the minute. The Spaniard has beaten Kerber in four consecutive meetings, although the last of those was in 2015.
Coco Vandeweghe (24) vs. Caroline Wozniacki (5)
We hinted in earlier previews that Coco might be one to watch in the ladies’ singles, and so far she is living up to expectations. Vandeweghe is yet to drop a set at Wimbledon 2017, while nobody since Mona Bartel in round one has taken more than six games off her in a match. Although she is yet to beat Wozniacki, there is nothing about the Dane’s game right now that suggests she will break her fourth-round hoodoo at the All England Club.
Dominic Thiem (8) vs. Tomas Berdych (11)
This is maybe the toughest to pick of several interesting match-ups in the men’s draw. Thiem is a player on the rise, and already this is his best-ever result at the Wimbledon Championships. Berdych is now a stalwart of the ATP Tour who is trying to squeeze out a few more years at the top before his body fails him. While 2017 has shown us that age is no barrier, we are backing the younger man on this occasion.
Milos Raonic (6) vs. Alexander Zverev (10)
No matter how much his all-round game might improve, one cannot help but feel that Wimbledon is Raonic’s best bet at winning a Grand Slam. He is aiming at a second consecutive appearance in the final, although four tiebreakers in three rounds suggest the big Canadian needs to work a bit harder when facing his opponent’s serve. Our money is with Zverev – an excellent young player who has beaten Raonic before, albeit on clay.
