Smith gets back-to-back Highway winners

Part-time Mudgee trainer David Smith is having a hard time believing he has trained two city winners after Distinctive Look won back-to-back Highway races.

Sent out the $5 favourite, Distinctive Look backed up his Highway win at Rosehill on September 24 by hanging on for a tough win at Randwick on Saturday.

Valatia ($61) and Flitero ($9.50) filled the placings.

“The first one was so surreal. My dad is still in disbelief that I actually won a city race,” Smith said.

“To come here and win at Royal Randwick is a different feeling.”

It was a happy return to the track for Smith, who spent four years working at Randwick for trainer John O’Shea.

He hopes come back again with Distinctive Look for next year’s Country Championships Final.

“I’d say we’ll go to the paddock now. He deserves a crack at the (Country Championships) heat at least,” Smith said.

The 31-year-old combines training three horses with his full-time job at Gooree Park Stud.

“We’ve been given a chance with a nice horse like this and we can get the results,” Smith said.

Distinctive Look gave apprentice jockey Koby Jennings a winning double after earlier winning on Niccolance.
