Prince Of Penzance lame from Caulfield run

Trainer Darren Weir says its is too early to tell whether Prince Of Penzance will be able to defend his Melbourne Cup crown.

Racing Victoria stewards reported last year’s Melbourne Cup winner had pulled up lame in the off-foreleg after running fourth in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

“We’ll have to wait and see how he is in the morning,” Weir said.

“We’ll see how he pulls up and if it needs further investigating we’ll work from there.”

John Allen, who rode Prince Of Penzance, said the gelding ran well on Saturday after being outsprinted with his big weight on the home turn before working to the line well.
