Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for March 4, 2023
The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, March 4, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.
All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au
Flemington Race 2: #4 So Unusual @ $2.80
We do not need to wait too long for our best bet on Saturday as the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained So Unusual steps out in the second event over 2500m. The four-year-old gelding has won three in a row and four of his last six starts and brings the best recent form to the race by a country mile. He was doing his best work late over 2400m at Sandown and, despite winning by a half-length, scored in relatively soft fashion. He continues to rise through the grades with great aplomb, and from barrier one on Saturday, he draws to gain a perfect run in transit throughout. As long as Dean Holland can get this son of Unusual Suspect off the rail at the right time, So Unusual should have too much upside for most of his rivals and continue his winning ways.
Randwick Race 5: #3 Economics @ $2.50
We made Economics our best bet last time before being scratched at the barriers, and we are happy to stay with him on Saturday in the Fireball Stakes. This colt finished his preparation really impressively behind In Secret in the Coolmore Stud Stakes back on October 29 and has trialled the house down coming into this new first-up assignment. He was forced back for a second trial leading into this at Hawkesbury on February 21 and under minor riding was able to salute in a soft jump out over 1000m. It was a proper hit out by James McDonald who gets the tick taking the ride this time and the only negative we can see is barrier 11. We’ll leave it to one of the worlds’ best to get a nice spot on Economics and despite this looking a tricky first-up assignment, we’re sticking with this son of Capitalist who has plenty of upside moving forward.
Eagle Farm Race 4: #8 Mishani Royale @ $2.40
Our best bet of the day will be the Les Ross-trained Mishani Royale, who will be returning to the races after an eight-week freshen since running in the Gold Pearl at the Gold Coast on January 7, where he won his second race in a row over Trifling and Excel D’or. This two-year-old filly hasn’t finished outside of the top two in her career, and she will be looking to make it a hattrick of wins on Saturday when she takes on her own age and sex in the QTIS Jewel Prelude 2YO Fillies Plate. Since defeating Trifling at her most recent start, that filly has gone on to record back-to-back wins as a favourite, which makes this girl’s form look much better, now that she returns against a field that is weaker than what she faced in the Gold Pearl. Ben Thompson will retain the ride on this daughter of Kobayashi after riding her to victory last start, and if he can give her a confident front-running ride, we should see her bring up the hat trick in fine style.

Murray Bridge Race 4: #1 Tacito @ $1.90
Our best bet of the day, Tacito, is set to compete in one of his easiest races to date on Saturday in the Murray Bridge Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The two-year-old colt from the Ben & JD Hayes barn chaseed home the smart duo Zulfiqar and Veecee on debut at Sandown before going on to Flemington and placing in the Listed Talindert Stakes. He steps out of Group & Listed company and, in a race worth $200,000, looks perfectly placed. From barrier eight in the small field, Jake Toeroek will look to have the Showtime colt settled in the one-one throughout, where he will be poised to strike. The small field looks to suit him, and with two minor placings to his name in tougher company to begin his career, it should be third time the charm for Tacito.
Ascot Race 5: #7 Western Knight @ $2.45
Our best bet of the day will be the Adam Durrant-trained Western Knight, who will be returning from a five-month spell after being given two nice trials over 950m and 1100m, where he was victorious on both occasions. This four-year-old gelding is a full brother to Group 1 winner Western Empire, and through five career starts, this gelding has a similar record to his brother, with two wins and two placings. This son of Iffraaj finished last preparation with a very nice win over 1650m at Belmont on September 24, where he got to the front early in the straight, and even though he didn’t have his mind on the job completely, he still won by a length on the line. William Pike will have his first ride on this gelding on Saturday after riding him at both of his trials this time around. Pike will know that this guy has raced quite green at most of his race starts to date, so expect an aggressive ride from Western Australia’s number one jockey, and if he gets even luck, this well-bred gelding should be recording career win number three.
