Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for February 4, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, February 3, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Sandown Race 8: #5 Detonator Jack @ $2.30

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Detonator Jack wasn’t suited by the sit and sprint nature in a BM100 at the 1700m here at Sandown on January 7 and if we get a race run at a genuine tempo this time round, he looks a class above this lot. With the likes of Nerve Not Verve, Nancho and Don’t Doubt Dory engaged, we are sure to get a genuinely run event which should suit a backmarker like Detonator Jack down to the ground in the penultimate event of the day. His want to settle at the rear of the field offsets barrier 11 and considering he has not finished outside of the top three in eight career starts, Detonator Jack brings an element of class to this BM100. He has the best turn of foot in the race and as long as he does not get too short with online bookmakers on race day, Detonator Jack is a clear best bet of the day.

Randwick Race 2: #4 Cosmic Minerva @ $3.10

Bjorn Baker looks to have Cosmic Minerva going really well this preparation and now finds a great chance to get his second win of the campaign. We love they’ve elected to come here on the one-week back up from last Saturday at Rosehill when finishing 0.7 lengths off African Daisy. He looked the winner for a stage before hitting a flat spot with about 200m to run and was unable to pick up again having to settle for third. James McDonald hops aboard now and from a soft draw can find himself in a position where he should be top four turning for home and in striking distance of the leaders. He’ll have an extra 100m to chase them down this time as well, stepping to the mile for the first time. This Deep Field gelding has found plenty of progression this preparation and is yet to miss the frame and we think that continues on Saturday.

Eagle Farm Race 3: #8 Vaccine @ $2.90

After being with this four-year-old mare last start and having her go down by the barest of margins, we are going to give Vaccine from the Tony Gollan yard another chance to break through for her first win this time in. This daughter of Not A Single Doubt has finished in the placings at her last two starts, with her last-start second being the better of the two runs, even though she had very little luck and was beaten by a nose on the line by a roughie over 1350m at Doomben on January 21. On Saturday, Gollan has chosen to take his mare to the 1600m for the first time in her career, and we think that he has found the perfect race for her maiden attempt at the journey. There looks to be a lot of speed in this race with most of the speed influences coming from the outside barriers, which should allow her to settle at the rear of the field and get into a rhythm. Ryan Maloney will stick again after taking the reins at her last two starts, and if he can have her working to the outside of the field and running home down the middle of the track in the home straight, we should see this mare finally record a much-deserved win.

Morphettville Race 9: #1 Secret War @ $4.00

Patience will be key on Saturday, as our best bet Secret War does not hit the track until the final race of the day. The seven-year-old gelding was a dominant all-the-way winner at Gawler on January 21 when putting five-lengths on his rivals early on and despite tiring inside the final 100m, never looked like getting beaten. Ellis Wong sticks on board and despite rising 4kg in the weight’s Secret War simply looks perfectly placed. Barrier 11 is offset by the early speed this son of Atomic possesses and in a race here he should gain an uncontested lead throughout. He has run his rivals off their feet at his last two starts and with a similar approach on Saturday, it should be more than enough for Secret War to bring up a third straight win under the urgings of the in-form Ellis Wong.

Ascot Race 5: #1 A Lot Of Good Men @ $2.15

Our best bet of the day at Ascot will come up in the lone two-year-old event of the afternoon, where we will be siding with the impressive last start winner, A Lot Of Good Men from the Trevor Andrews yard. This son of A Lot was first-up last start over 1000m when he settled in the one-one behind the pace makers and when the leader kicked clear by two lengths, Paul Harvey pulled this colt to the outside to make his run. When in clear air and Harvey pressed the button, this colt lengthened nicely and picked up the runaway leader in the final 50m to record a comfortable maiden victory. On Saturday from barrier six, we should see this him settle in a similar position on the outside either in the one-one or one pair behind the first four upon settling. With eight of the 16 runners being on debut, we should see a strong speed and if the leaders do go quick, it should set the race up nicely for a swooper like this colt.
