Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for April 8, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, April 8, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Randwick Race 5: #1 Aft Cabin @ $1.95

Aft Cabin is a clear best bet of the day and should be very hard to beat in this three-year-old sprint. He comes here freshened up after three runs for James Cummings, culminating in a lacklustre performance in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas. We love that the stable has taken him back to the trials, and he now finds a 1200m race that, with all things even, he should have on a platter. Zou Tiger warrants plenty of respect after beating home Aft Cabin in the Hobartville Stakes and Randwick Guineas; however, Aft Cabin gave Zou Tiger wind burn in the Eskimo Prince over this course and distance. The scratching of What You Need leaves this race thin overall, and we think the even money on offer for Aft Cabin could be value come Saturday afternoon.

Sandown Race 1: #6 Foxicon @ $2.50

Our best bet of the day at Sandown comes up nice and early when the Peter Moody-trained Foxicon steps out in the opener over 1200m. The four-year-old mare strung together two nice victories at Moonee Valley before running into the speedy Unflinching over 955m on March 24. This query is whether she will see out the 1200m, but with Carleen Hefel on board and claiming 2kg, she is sure to be given every chance in running on Saturday. She draws to gain an economical run and if she can absorb the speed in the race, look for Foxicon to pile on the pressure 300m and prove too hard to gun down late.

Doomben Race 6: #2 Chinny Boom @ $2.05

The Clinton Taylor-trained Chinny Boom returned from a five-month spell with a massive 8.75-length trial victory over 900m at Rockhampton on March 20. Last preparation, this three-year-old filly was defeated for the first time in her career by Stroll in the Listed Mode Stakes over 1200m at this track on December 3 before going out for a spell. This daughter of Spirit Of Boom was dominant in her first five victories, winning by an average margin of 4.35 lengths, before losing by the smallest of margins in the Mode Stakes, where the gap between first and third was less than half a length. Sunshine In Paris, the third horse in that race, has won the Group 1 Surround Stakes and finished second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes since returning from a spell, demonstrating that this filly’s form is very strong heading into her third racing campaign. Ben Thompson rode Chinny Boom at Eagle Farm and Doomben at the end of last preparation, so he knows her very well and we expect him to give her every possible chance to record her sixth victory at her seventh start.

Oakbank Race 3: #1 Validated @ $2.90

Peter & Belinda Blanch look to have a nice one on their hands in Validated, and we expect the three-year-old will bring up a fourth-straight win. The gelding went out a winner, and in his first two runs back he has been nothing but impressive when registering back-to-back wins at Morphettville. He has only won by the barest of margins on both occasions over 1200m and then 1250m, but we anticipate the step up to 1400m third-up will see him produce a new career peak. With Sheridan Tomlinson on board claiming 3kg, Validated goes around with 57.5kg on his back, which will only aid his ability to settle at the rear of the field and charge over his rivals late on.

Ascot Race 1: #1 Snowdome @ $2.00

We won’t have to wait long for our best bet at Ascot, as the Neville Parnham-trained Snowdome looks to win his fourth race of his career after finishing third first-up over 1200m here on March 25. This three-year-old colt’s race was ruined last start when he jumped second last and had to settle at the back of the field, which was far outside of his natural racing pattern in which he prefers to lead and run his races to suit himself. Even though this Rommel son will be dropping from 1200m to 1000m, he shouldn’t be concerned because this race appears to be significantly weaker than his previous start. This colt finished third behind the star filly Amelia’s Jewel in the Listed Belgravia Stakes last preparation, so if he can replicate that performance, he should be far too good for this small field on Saturday. If Snowdome jumps well and improves on his get away from last start, he should lead from barrier one and kick clear on the home turn to record a strong win.
