Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for April 29, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, April 29, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Morphettville Race 4: #9 Sghirripa @ $2.25

Sghirripa is yet to miss the frame in any of his five starts. The three-year-old gelding from the Shane & Cassie Oxlade barn resumed from a six-month spell with a narrow defeat in BM72 company over the 1050m at the track when gunned down late after setting up a hot speed. From barrier four on Saturday, the Lonhro gelding will not need to work hard at all to find the front, and with his sole career victory coming when second-up, it looks to be the recipe for success once again. Under a well-rated ride, Sghirripa should be too speedy for this lot.

Eagle Farm Race 7: #9 Antino @ $1.90

The Tony Gollan-trained Antino will be second-up in the Benchmark 85 Handicap over 1400m, coming off a very impressive win over 1200m first-up last start. This five-year-old gelding has taken his record to five wins from six starts, with his only loss coming at the Eagle Farm 1600m in The Gateway last preparation. However, the field that this son of Redwood meets on Saturday is much weaker than what he faced in The Gateway, so he appears to have found a nice race to improve his rating and earn his way into some decent events during this year’s Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. James Orman has ridden this gelding at all six of his career starts and will continue that streak when he is legged aboard this weekend. Barrier 10 is a little sticky, but with Antino’s ability to settle on-pace or mid-field, he should be able to overcome the barrier and still win this race.

Sandown Race 2: #10 King’s Crossing @ $2.80

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet at Sandown as the Danny O’Brien-trained King’s Crossing looks to go one better than his narrow defeat at Geelong last time out. The three-year-old gelding seemingly had the race shot to pieces at Geelong, before a $101 shot pipped him in the shadows of the winning post with a freakish finish. The pair put three lengths on their closest rival, and considering how this son of Almanzor won his maiden the start prior, he looks to have a bit more ability than the rest of these. Look for Jye McNeil to hold a prominent spot aboard King’s Crossing, who should prove too hard to hold out over 2400m.

Rosehill Race 5: #6 Hellfest @ $5.50

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Hellfest for the James Cummings yard. She’s been off the track for a spell of 133 days and went to the paddock on an impressive run behind progressive sprinter I Am Me on December 17. She finished third, 3.8 lengths off the winner, and did so in sharp time while chasing home a galloper who went on to win at stakes grade. Hellfest is a Group 3 winner in her own right, taking out the Typhoon Tracy Stakes as a three-year-old. She’s been beautifully placed by the Godolphin team here at BM88 level and her best form rates to be well in contention – particularly with the scratching of Democracy Manifest, who is headed to the penultimate race on the program. Her trials leading into this contest have been sensational, and with the classy apprentice Zac Lloyd taking the reins from an inside barrier, we’d be surprised if Hellfest didn’t hit the lead at some stage. She has to hold off some quality gallopers in the form of Fox Fighter, Kipsbay and Vowmaster, but we think she’s up for the challenge.

Ascot Race 9: #11 Classic Encounter @ $2.15

In the last race of the day, the Adam Durrant-trained Classic Encounter will return to Ascot for the second time in her career coming off an ultra-impressive 4.8-length victory at Geraldton on April 16. This three-year-old filly has taken her career record to two wins and a second from five starts, with her last-start win being the best performance of her career to date. This daughter of Pierro settled midfield from barrier three, and when the field rounded the home turn, she coasted up the leaders under her own steam before William Pike even pushed the button. Once Pike pushed the button and released the brakes, this filly let down with an explosive finishing burst to power away from her rivals. Pike has retained the ride on Classic Encounter for her second start this campaign, and if he can replicate the ride he performed on her last time, this girl should be winning again.
