Saturday Slingshot: Horse racing best bets for April 1, 2023

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, April 1, 2023 to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Randwick Race 4: #3 Sequestered @ $2.30

Sequestered is a dominant favourite in the Adrian Knox Stakes for the three-year-old fillies and its easy to see why. She’s been consistent over her four starts this preparation with her last two providing victories for team Godolphin. She was an even-money commodity when despatching Byron Belle at Hawkesbury on March 4 and did so in stylish fashion. Byron Belle wasn’t disgraced in the Vinery Stud Stakes last Saturday either, so the form should stack up nicely here. Her barrier trial since that win was outstanding running in behind Alcohol Free at Randwick over the 1200m. doing so under a hold throughout to run third. She looks progressive and we think this Pierro filly will prove too good before heading to the Australian Oaks.

Bendigo Race 6: #1 Queen Air @ $1.95

Wins do not come much more impressive than what the Lindsey Smith-trained Queen Air produced in The Mystic Journey at Moonee Valley on March 18. The three-year-old filly settled up on speed and tracked race favourite Summerbeel throughout the 2040m event, and when asked for an effort on the home turn, she quickened like a smart horse should and put four lengths on arguably a tougher field than what she faces on Saturday. She was placed in the VRC Oaks during the spring, so we know the 2200m will be no issue for this Toronado filly. Despite going up 8kg from her last-start win, Queen Air is clearly the class horse of the field. As long as she avoids issues in running, she looks a clear best bet of the day at Bendigo.

Doomben Race 8: #6 Manhood @ $2.35

Manhood, trained by Annabel Neasham, is coming off a very nice first-up win this preparation. This son of Headwater returned to the racetrack as a gelding after receiving the ‘ultimate gear change’ in the paddock, and he proved too good for the Class 6 field over 1200m at Eagle Farm on March 11, defeating Enterprise Pomme by half a length on the line. That win kept this four-year-old gelding’s unblemished first-up record intact, and now that he comes to Doomben second-up, he looks awfully hard to beat in a weaker Benchmark 85 Handicap over 1200m. Jag Guthmann-Chester has a perfect 3-0 record on this guy and will keep the ride this Saturday. We should Manhood settle outside the leader and kick clear in the final 200m to make it back-to-back wins to start the campaign.

Morphettville Race 2: #4 Tapinforpar @ $2.60

Tapinforpar was a dominant winner on the Parks track at Morphettville on March 25 and on the quick seven-day backup looks a clear best bet of the day on a tricky card. The three-year-old gelding managed to land in the one-one upon settling and gained the gun run in transit and capitalised in impressive fashion. The Spieth gelding managed to put three-lengths on his rivals on that day and having drawn to gain a similar run in transit on Saturday, there looks to be no excuses. Lachie Neindorf sticks on board with 1.5kg claim which is an added bonus and with just 57kg on his back, Tapinforpar should prove too good for his rivals once again.

Ascot Race 2: #7 Marmooga @ $3.30

Our best bet for the day at Ascot will be the Simon Miller-trained Marmooga, who has won back-to-back races at Ascot over 1000m and 1100m, breaking her maiden and then winning a Class 1 Handicap. This three-year-old filly appears to be very progressive, and now that she has won a Class 1 Handicap in which the third horse has come out and won since, it shows that her race form is decent without being particularly strong. This Snitzel daughter is yet to lose at Ascot after two starts, and she has only missed the placings once at 1000m in three attempts. Holly Watson will ride this filly again on Saturday after riding her in her previous two starts. With the help of her 1.5kg claim and jumping from barrier three, Watson should settle Marmooga close to the speed or lead and then kick clear at the top of the home straight to complete a hat trick.
