Saturday horse racing tips

The Saturday Slingshot presented by Bettingsite.com.au is here, and it brings you the best bets for horse racing in Australia on Saturday, January 20, 2024, to help you launch into a winning weekend on the punt.

All odds are provided by leading online bookmakers recommended by Bettingsite.com.au

Flemington Race 1: #2 Bermadez @ -117.65

Our best bet comes up in the opening event of the day as Mike Moroney’s Bermadez steps out over 1600m. The seven-year-old gelding has finished second at all three starts this campaign, including when running second to Holymanz in a much tougher race than this at Geelong on January 6. Race one will suit him perfectly, as he does appreciate a bit of sting out of the ground, and in a small field of six, we know he will be close to the leaders throughout. In the small field, look for Jye McNeil to hold a prominent position from barrier three and not let key market rival Suparazi get too far out of his sights. Bermadez on his day, is the best horse in this race, and if he can finally put it all together, he should just be winning.

Rosehill Race 5 #1 Caballus @ +145

Formerly trained by Chris Waller, Caballus looks prepared for a first-up assault with the Bjorn Baker barn as the three-year-old colt makes his return after a 115-day spell. The son of I Am Invincible put together a strong campaign, however, seemingly lost his way towards the end of the preparation, only managing to finish four lengths away from Felix Majestic in a BM72 at this course on September 27. A change of environment has seemingly done the trick, with two impressive barrier trials wins catching the eye, with Caballus striding clear in both jump-outs. There’s speed to burn in this contest, and with Joshua Parr smoking the pipe in behind the speed, watch for this guy to be launching late.

Doomben Race 6: #12 Substantial @ +100

Peter & Paul Snowden are still seeking their first victory with Substantial in Australia after the ex-European import was sent over to them from William Haggas in March last year. This six-year-old gelding has been running in much better grades than what he will face on Saturday at Eagle Farm. His most recent effort in a Benchmark 100 over 1600m where he finished three lengths behind Grebini at Randwick, would be good enough to win this Class 6 Handicap. After drawing to do no work from barrier one and gaining the services of Ryan Maloney, Substantial should get his best chance to break through in Australia.

Ascot Race 2: #2 Final Siren @ -111.11

Final Siren will return from a six-week freshen on Saturday, where the three-year-old gelding will be attempting to keep his undefeated record intact after winning his first three career starts. The Rebecca Bayliss-trained gelding led from start to finish and won dominantly in a 3YO Open Handicap last start at this track over 1000m, where he defeated Petula by 1.3 lengths. This son of I’m All The Talk will stay in a similar grade but will have some extra challenges on Saturday, as he will have to run an extra 100m and is coming off a break. If Kyra Yuill can find the front without doing too much work, this smart galloper should bring up his fourth straight victory.
