Rugby League World Cup top team tryscorer tips & best odds

With the Rugby League World Cup on the horizon, many eyes will turn to England as some of the best players on the planet gather for a festival of footy. The talent on display will be of the absolute highest order, and with conditions in both teams and at grounds yet to be determined, there is plenty of value on offer in the top team tryscorer markets.

AUSTRALIA – CAMERON MUNSTER

Of all the names on the Australian squad list, Cam Munster stands out for more reasons than the obvious. At points during the NRL season, the Melbourne Storm star showed he had an ability to do things in rugby league that others can only dream of. The perfect example of this was against the Sharks in round six when Munster stepped, fended and dummied his way to the in goal area for the Storm’s try of the season.

A few days ago, it looked like Munster might enter this tournament with a cloud hovering over his future at club level. But now that he has signed a long-term contract extension with the Storm, the gifted five-eighth could not be more settled. A versatile playmaker who knows how to get to the line in big games, Munster looks a great value play to top the tryscoring charts for the Kangaroos.

NEW ZEALAND – JOSEPH MANU

Joseph Manu will be one of the most watched players in this Kiwis side, as he is one of the men with the highest ceiling for attacking ability. Not only is he one of the best right centres in rugby league, but, when given the opportunity, he is also among the best fullbacks and five-eighths.

Just as Trent Robinson has done at the Roosters, NZ head coach Michael Maguire will surely plan to use Manu as a roaming player who has the option to swing to either side of the field whenever he sees fit. Given he can score in so many ways, Manu will be towards the top of the tryscorer list for New Zealand – if not at the very top.

TONGA – SIOSIFA TALAKAI

Siosifa Talakai will be one to watch at the World Cup for reasons different than one may expect. Of course, the first half against Manly at PointsBet Stadium this year showed that Talakai is one of the most damaging centres in the NRL on his day, but what’s forgotten is why Talakai dropped off in form towards the end of the season.

Talakai battled both a syndesmosis injury and a shoulder injury during the back half of the 2022 NRL season, which greatly hindered his attacking ability. Given the Sharks’ early exit in the 2022 finals series, Talakai should be fully fit and ready to return to his lethal best as the focal point of the Tongan attack.

PNG – XAVIER COATES

Xavier Coates may be teaming up with one of the most prolific tryscorers in NRL history, but he will be the better attacking target over Alex Johnston. Coates had somewhat of the breakout season that was expected after he joined the Melbourne Storm, where he was the target of long and short kicks, as well as cut-out passes to score in the right corner.

Not only is Coates’ finishing ability among the best in the world, but he also can score from long range with his speed and size, as well as capitalise on loose balls when he doesn’t give up on a play. He may be short odds to do so, but Coates certainly deserves that favouritism of being Papua New Guinea’s top tryscorer.

SAMOA – JOSEPH SUAALII

Joseph Suaalii showed in the second half of the 2022 NRL season why he is one of the most highly touted young players in the game. Suaalii not only has the finishing skills required to be a great winger, but also incredible size and strength. Besides using those physical traits to take one of the first hit-ups of a game from the kickoff, he also used it to take on and take down Viliame Kikau when the Roosters faced the Panthers this year.

Suaalii will be looking to put all of that ability on display when he lines up for Samoa, most likely in the fullback role. He does not need much time or space to physically dominate his opposition, and given the opportunity, he will certainly be among Samoa’s most dangerous scoring threats.

ENGLAND – HERBIE FARNWORTH

While England may struggle in this year’s World Cup, one player who will not is Herbie Farnworth. He has shown for a long period of time at the Brisbane Broncos that he can be a shining light in a poorly performing side.

Farnworth’s strength, skill and determination has brought him a lot of success when it comes to scoring for the Broncos, as he is often one of their most used weapons. Farnworth will surely be the spearhead of the English attack this World Cup, putting him in the box seat to be their highest tryscorer.
