Rabbitohs v Panthers Rd 9 match preview

Round nine of the 2024 NRL Premiership kicks off with a hapless Rabbitohs outfit hosting the triple-premiership-winning Panthers at Accor Stadium on Thursday night.

Penrith opened as $1.15 favourites with online bookmakers and could start at even shorter odds given South Sydney’s poor form for this season.

Although the South Sydney Rabbitohs did show some fight against the Storm last weekend, they still lacked power and presence in the middle third and gave away more penalties than their opponents. Souths have lost nine of their last 10 matches in Sydney, and that trend is expected to continue as the Panthers cover the 15.5-point line ($1.85).

Not only have the Rabbitohs lost nine of their last 10 matches in Sydney; they have also lost the first half in each of their last nine games, and they’ve lost both halves in each of their last three. This is something Penrith will look to capitalise on as a side that likes to take the lead early and dominate the entirety of the match. The Panthers to win both halves is a safe bet ($1.24).

Penrith captain Nathan Cleary had a brilliant return to the NRL last weekend, controlling the match against the Cowboys with his kicking game. While the star halfback also ran for 105 metres, he failed to record a line break or tackle break. With the Panthers expected to win this game comfortably, Cleary should have more opportunity to run the football, and that should lead to him scoring a try ($3.15).
