Only two wins separates the sixth and third on the NBL ladder, with seventh and eight only a win behind sixth, making this one of the tightest seasons in recent times.
Only the top four teams will advance to the NBL Finals, meaning it is now or never for several of the franchises.
New Zealand Breakers vs Sydney Kings betting tips
• NBL odds: Breakers $2.14 at BetOnline | Kings $1.71 at BetOnline
• When: Friday, January 17 at 5:30pm AEDT
• Where: TSB Stadium – New Plymouth, New Zealand
Just when the Breakers were looking to return to the top six, they must face the best team in the NBL this season. Two straight losses have already hindered the Breakers enough, but a win at home over the Kings would eliminate any bad energy surrounding the team. Look out for Daniel Kickert coming off the bench for the Kings after starring with 18 points last round.
Perth Wildcats vs South East Melbourne Phoenix betting tips
• NBL odds: Wildcats $1.37 at BetOnline | Phoenix $3.13 at BetOnline
• When: Friday, January 17 at 9:30pm AEDT
• Where: RAC Arena – Perth, Western Australia
There’s a little thing in sports called momentum, and it is not always easy to come by, but the Perth Wildcats are looking to build some with a home victory against SEM Phoenix this week. Both teams have lost three of their last five matches and are slowly finding form again, so this match is super-important. The Wildcats could jump up to first on the NBL ladder, while Phoenix could re-enter the finals race.
Brisbane Bullets vs Illawarra Hawks betting tips
• NBL odds: Bullets $1.15 at BetOnline | Hawks $5.50 at BetOnline
• When: Saturday, January 18 at 5:30 pm AEDT
• Where: Nissan Arena – Brisbane, Queensland
While it has been a great season for the Hawks in terms of popularity and worldwide coverage, they have struggled on the court. Without their star player LaMelo Ball, who is sidelined with a foot injury, it is hard to watch the Hawks. The Bullets are short-priced favourites and they should be, as Lamar Patterson has lifted Brisbane into finals contention with his MVP-like season.
Cairns Taipans vs Adelaide 36ers betting tips
• NBL odds: Tapians $1.50 at BetOnline | Adelaide 36ers $2.60 at BetOnline
• When: Saturday, January 18 at 8pm AEDT
• Where: Cairns Convention Centre – Cairns, Queensland
The Taipans have been nothing short of horrific on the road this season, but they have given their home fans plenty to cheer about at the Snake Pit. The Adelaide 36ers keep surprising teams and remain a top-four contender. This is a must-win road match for the 36ers and a must-win match for Cairns, sitting in third position on the NBL ladder.
New Zealand Breakers vs Melbourne United betting tips
• NBL odds: Breakers $1.90 at BetOnline | United $1.90 at BetOnline
• When: Sunday, January 19 at 3pm AEDT
• Where: Spark Arena – Auckland, New Zealand
The Breakers’s second match of the round is still in New Zealand, making their travel time barely recordable, whilst the Melbourne United boys will need to get on a plane and make their way to Auckland. With the odds a dead-even $1.90 apiece, this is the most anticipated match of the round. Can NBA 2020 draft prospect RJ Hampton get his Breakers over the line, or will the spread of United talent be too much to deal with?
Sydney Kings vs South East Melbourne Phoenix betting tips
• NBL odds: Kings $1.35 at BetOnline | Phoenix $3.21 at BetOnline
• When: Sunday, January 19 at 5pm AEDT
• Where: Qudos Bank Arena – Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales
The final match of NBL Round 16 features two teams playing their second games of the week. The Kings are hard to handle in Sydney, but the Phoenix boys do not mind taking on strong opposition. The Kings will have the edge after winning both of their meetings with SEM earlier in the season, but you never know what Phoenix will produce with everything on the line.
