Round 18 Result:
Essendon Bombers: Win over Fremantle, 99 – 70
Sydney Swans: Loss to Gold Coast, 64 – 88
The Essendon Bombers and Sydney Swans kick off a huge round of football when they slug it out with crucial finals spots on the line at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
After very contrasting matches last week, the Bombers will host this match as the short-priced favourites.
John Longmire could not believe his eyes when his Swans lost to the Gold Coast Suns for the first time in the club’s history last week in one of the biggest upset of the decade.
The Bombers were classy enough to overcome a very enthusiastic Fremantle in their clash last at Etihad Stadium last week to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
Going back to last season, the Swans were able to beat the Bombers on two different occasions, one being an after the siren thriller that saw Gary Rohan take a mark in the goal-square, seconds before time ran out. The second match being the elimination final, where the Swans belted the Dons by a convincing 65-point margin.
If that form remains relevant, the Swans will fancy their chances, but as we know, football is far too unpredictable to make calls based onf matches that were played 12 months ago.
Here are our tips for the match between the Essendon Bombers and the Sydney Swans.
Essendon Bombers vs. Sydney Swans Round 19 – First to Tips
First team to 15 Points
Essendon Bombers @ $1.84
The Bombers are just as capable as any team to get off to a brilliant start. On their home deck, not many teams can match the speed of the Essendon midfield. The likes of Zach Merrett and Devon Smith are too classy for most big-bodied midfielders who prefer a slugfest.
First team to 50 Points
Essendon Bombers @ $1.77
After a strong start, we see the Bombers pushing through against a tired-looking Swans outfit and being the first team to make a half century. The Swans will be ready for the contest, but after that putrid performance against the Suns, we are staying clear of John Longmire’s men.
Essendon Bombers vs. Sydney Swans Round 19 – Player Specials Tips
Michael Hurley to get 25 Disposals @ $2.15
Based off his recent form, Michael Hurley is not playing the best footy of his life, but he has been good enough in our eyes to punt upon. With an average of 23.3 touches per outing, we are confident that Michael can exceed the 25 mark in this one. With the Swans smaller forward line, Michael will be able to run off Buddy when the opportunity arises, which should see him pick up a few extra touches per quarter.
Isaac Heeney to get 25 Disposals @ $1.90
The future face of the AFL has played very well this season, earning multiple votes in the coaches’ award. This match suits Heeney’s game, which is fast, hard and frenetic. He could get up the ground and use his class to help others or play as a permanent forward and support Buddy Franklin. It doesn’t matter where Heeney plays, he knows how to find the footy and should be capable of getting well into the 30’s, meaning the 25 shouldn’t be too hard for him.
Essendon Bombers vs. Sydney Swans Round 19 – Total Points Tip
Total Match Points 166.5 Over/Under
Under @ $1.90
After leaking goals to the lowly Suns last week, we think that Sydney will be a lot more miserly and do everything it can to slow the match down. Factor in the regular inaccuracy shown by both clubs and we think the game will go under the 166.5-point line.
Bombers vs. Swans Match Predictions
Match Result: Essendon Bombers to win @ $1.78
Line Betting: Essendon Bombers -3.5 @ $1.92
Essendon to win, but only by the skin of its teeth. The Bombers will do to Sydney what Gary Rohan did to the Bombers last season — expect a thriller.
