Horn wants Mayweather fight, but could he beat McGregor?

Horn vs. Pacquaio 2

IT was announced on Monday that Jeff Horn and Manny Pacquiao would renew hostilities in a much-hyped sequel to the infamous ‘Battle of Brisbane’.

Horn took the honours when the pair met at Suncorp Stadium in July, but the controversial points decision left Pacquiao and the rest of the boxing world craving a rematch.

After much speculation, which included concerns over the fighters’ availability, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane confirmed the bout was pencilled in for later in the year.

“Now this has been talked about for some time, negotiations have been happening,” Graham Quirk told reporters.

“I have had a meeting earlier which has confirmed that Manny Pacquiao will definitely be in Brisbane this year for a rematch with Jeff Horn.”

Horn is already eyeing another massive scalp.

This weekend will see the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr take on Conor McGregor in what many are calling the biggest fight of all time.

According to ‘The Hornet’, there can only be one winner.

“I hope Mayweather annihilates him and I think he will,” Horn said in an interview on Monday.

“But I like McGregor, much more than Mayweather. McGregor is hilarious and a great entertainer.

“It will be dreadful for the sport of boxing if Mayweather, one of the greatest fighters of all time, gets rolled by a guy having his first fight but I can’t see McGregor doing too well even with all the hype.”

Horn was a complete unknown when he watched Mayweather and Pacquiao duke it out in Las Vegas in 2015.

That fight was, at the time, considered the greatest boxing bout in history, drawing over AUD $800 million.

Having already clocked ‘Pacman’, Horn wants the chance to complete the set.

“I’ve now beaten one of the two guys in that fight and I’d like to beat the other one as well,” said the Australian star.

“My trainer Glenn Rushton and I have discussed ways to beat Mayweather.

“A few years ago we saw Marcos Maidana from Argentina give Floyd the fight of his life but Maidana didn’t have the engine to sustain it for 12 rounds.

“I’d fight Mayweather like Maidana did but I’d do it for 12 rounds, not six.

“That’s the way McGregor has to fight against Mayweather but how is he going to do that with virtually no boxing experience?

“Those things take years to learn. I’m considered an inexperienced world champ and yet I fought some of the best amateurs in the world, competed at the Olympics and have beaten about 10 world-rated professionals.

“McGregor hasn’t even had one proper boxing fight.”

While Horn has Mayweather in his sights, all the money is on McGregor to stage a huge upset in Vegas this Sunday.

Should the Irishman deliver, it would set the scene for a tantalising matchup with the WBO welterweight champion.

Sportsbet.com.au has leapt into the future and put up a market for just such an occurrence.

The online bookmaker rates Horn as a -133.33 favourite to beat ‘The Notorious One’, who is priced at +100 outright odds.

The numbers are far looser for Mayweather vs. McGregor, where the UFC superstar remains a +300 rank outsider despite overwhelming public support.

Sportsbet has taken some truly outlandish bet requests via the #BYOMayMac feature, including a +15000 quote for McGregor to win by knockout inside 13 seconds.

While Mayweather has drifted from -666.67 out to -370.37, the bookies have complete faith in a man aiming at 50 professional wins without defeat.

“The punters rate Conor McGregor a massive chance to beat Floyd Mayweather, but we can’t see Conor beating either Floyd or the Hornet in a boxing ring,” said Sportsbet’s Christian Jantzen.
