The home-and-away phase of the 2021/22 Big Bash League season comes to a close this Wednesday with a triple-header, the first leg of which sees the Sydney Sixers take on the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.

For the Sixers, this is their last chance to lock up second spot in the BBL standings. If they fall short, the Sydney Thunder could leapfrog them with a win over the Melbourne Renegades.

The pink half of the Harbour City will feel they have already thrown away a chance to make sure of a top-two finish. They were well beaten by the Adelaide Strikers on Monday night, and another loss here would send up some red flags for the defending champions.

That said, the Sixers would have to be well off their game to stumble against a Brisbane Heat outfit that has now lost five games on the trot. The Queensland side’s big names just haven’t got going this season, while COVID-related issues have sorely tested the depth of the squad.

The Heat are out of finals contention and could wind up with the wooden spoon, but do they have one last effort left in them?

Heat vs Sixers BBL predictions & best bets

Sydney Sixers top runscorer: Moises Henriques

With Josh Philippe ($3) at shorts despite some patchy form in the run to the finals, the Sydney Sixers skipper looks the way to go in the top batsman stakes. Henriques has been a model of consistency this campaign and will be looking to springboard into the finals with a big score on Wednesday.

The Sixers ($1.54) aren’t offering a lot of juice in the head-to-head market, so we are tacking on Brisbane’s Sam Heazlett to score 20 or more runs ($1.91). The 26-year-old Queenslander has been one of the Heat’s most reliable batters this summer and will be determined to finish the campaign on a high.
