Round 9: Geelong vs Port Adelaide match preview

Looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season, Geelong are back at GMHBA Stadium this Friday night as they host the Port Adelaide Power in round nine of the 2024 AFL season.

In a low-scoring affair last Saturday, the Geelong Cats fell to the Melbourne Demons by eight points at the MCG. With veteran pair Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins kept goalless, the Cats kicked just nine majors.

Having dropped to second on the ladder, Geelong head into this Friday as comfortable favourites at $1.28 with PlayUp, with a handicap of -22.5.

On the injury front for the Cats, young midfielder Tanner Bruhn remains a chance to play despite being subbed off with a shoulder injury against the Demons. If he doesn’t get up, expect midfield pair Brandan Parfitt and Mark O’Connor to be in the frame after being managed last Saturday.

Last Thursday night, the Port Adelaide Power continued their recent Showdown struggles as they fell to the Adelaide Crows by 30 points. Plagued by inaccuracy, Port kicked 5.18, failing to take advantage of their +10 differential for inside 50s.

Losing two of their last three, the Power sit seventh on the ladder, with a pair of big losses hurting their percentage.

In further bad news, the Power will be without skipper Connor Rozee and defender Lachie Jones for their trip to Geelong after they both suffered hamstring injuries. However, they will regain tall pair Aliir Aliir and Mitch Georgiades at either end of the ground.

With the pressure slowly building on Ken Hinkley and the Power, travelling down to Geelong for the toughest away trip in the AFL could hardly have come at a worse time. Port haven’t won at the venue since 2007, and without their captain, an upset appears unlikely. Having a career-best season in 2024, young key forward Ollie Henry has emerged as a genuine threat inside 50 for the Cats. There is much more responsibility on Port midfielder Zak Butters this week as he takes the captaincy for the first time. He is averaging 28.5 touches per game in 2024 and comes into this clash off a 33-disposal effort against the Crows. Butters collected 30 disposals last time he played the Cats, and at -111.11 with Neds, expect him to do it again.
