Round 9: Fremantle vs Sydney match preview

Sitting on top of the ladder, the Sydney Swans head across to Perth on Friday night to face the Fremantle Dockers in round nine of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.

The Swans enter as favourites on the road at -138.89 with Bet365, with a handicap of -5.5 set between the sides.

Last Sunday, the Dockers collected their second win in a row as they beat the Richmond Tigers by 54 points at the MCG. Dominant from start to finish, Freo led at every change. Luke Ryan (39 disposals) and Caleb Serong (38 disposals) had plenty of the footy, while Josh Treacy booted four goals.

Now sitting in sixth spot on the AFL ladder, the Fremantle Dockers also have a great percentage. However, they have lost both matches against top-eight sides this season — a trend they will need to overcome if they are going to fight for a finals spot.

Despite being subbed out against the Tigers, ruckman Sean Darcy is expected to play this week. Veteran midfielder Nat Fyfe has been tipped to return to the starting side after playing as the substitute, while small forward Sam Switkowski returns from concussion.

The Sydney Swans secured their fourth consecutive win last Saturday as they beat the GWS Giants by 29 points at the SCG. Playing in wet conditions, the Swans were far too strong, overcoming a 15-point deficit to secure a comfortable victory.

After beating their local rivals, John Longmire’s men have now established themselves as premiership favourites at +400 with top AFL bookmakers.

The Swans will be without key defender Tom McCartin, who was concussed against the Giants. Aaron Francis and off-season recruit Joel Hamling are the likely replacements, while veteran on-baller Luke Parker could also be recalled after a couple of excellent weeks in the VFL.

In first place with just one loss and the best percentage in the AFL, the Swans have looked almost unstoppable to start the season. Facing the highest-scoring side in the league, the pressure is on the young Dockers forward line to kick a winning total. As favourites, the Swans should be too strong as they cover the -5.5 handicap at -109.89 with Neds.

Playing off the half-back line for the Dockers, Jordan Clark has been incredibly consistent this season. Averaging 25.1 disposals per game, the 23-year-old provides plenty of run and collects nearly all of his footy uncontested.
