Two of the 2022 AFL season’s early bolters will clash this Saturday night when the Carlton Blues head to Perth to take on the Fremantle Dockers.

Freo go into this game as warm favourites, and deservedly so. Interstate teams can often fly under the radar and the Dockers have been quietly putting together a string of impressive performances. They are a young team, so you can expect the occasional clanger, but they are playing very solid footy and currently sit second on the ladder with a 4-1 record. AFL betting markets have been slow to appreciate Freo’s form, and their game against the Bombers was generously priced at coin-flip odds. Carlton have been something of a surprise package this season. External expectations were not especially high, but they have come out firing and also stand at 4-1. The style of this game will largely determine the outcome. If Carlton can drag Freo into a shoot-out, their hopes improve, but if the Dockers can slow the tempo and make it a more tactical affair, the home side are likely to prevail.

Key matchup: Taberner vs Weitering

Hulking Fremantle forward Matt Taberner was unstoppable against the Bombers, booting 7.0 and grabbing six marks. The entire Freo forward line looked potent, with Sam Switkowski kicking 2.0 and the speedy Michael Fredrick adding 2.0 also. Containing this firepower will be a big challenge for the Blues, and it feels as though Jacob Weitering will need to do some heavy lifting if Carlton are to have any chance of victory.
