Round 10: Dragons v Rabbitohs match preview

A much-improved St George Illawarra Dragons side will host what is now a must-win match for the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium this Saturday in round 10 of the 2024 NRL season.

The Dragons sit 13th on the NRL ladder and will be looking to bounce back from a 10-point loss to the Sharks last week, which followed a heavy defeat to the Roosters on ANZAC Day. Even so, they come in as heavy favourites at $1.52 with online bookmakers.

Although they’ve suffered significant injuries and suspensions, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have been this season’s biggest disappointment. They sit last on the NRL ladder, with their only win coming in round four against a Bulldogs side made a multitude of errors and had a player sin-binned.

Rabbitohs interim coach Ben Hornby will be without captain Cameron Murray (hip), halfback Dean Hawkins (quad), centre Isaiah Tass (ankle), fullback Jye Gray (ankle) and second-rower Jacob Host (suspended).

Fortunately for the Bunnies, Latrell Mitchell returns at fullback, Gehamat Shibasaki has been secured on a short-term deal to play on the wing, Sean Keppie starts in the front row, Jai Arrow joins the second row, and Siliva Havili will play lock.

Dion Teaupa has been named to make his NRL debut at halfback, with Matt French set to take his first-grade bow from the bench.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has made just one change to his side, welcoming back Mosese Suli into the centres. As a result, Zac Lomax goes back to the wing and Christian Tuipulotu drops to the reserves.

The Rabbitohs have lost 10 of their last 11 matches in Sydney, while they’ve lost both halves of football in each of their last four games. They have also failed to cover the line in each of their last 15 starts. With the Dragons returning to their home ground with a full-strength side, they should secure a win and cover the -5.5 handicap with ease ($1.87).

The Dragons have failed to score more than 20 points in three of their last five games, while the Rabbitohs have scored 20 or less in four of their last five. Low-scoring affairs have been the trend for the Dragons, with 12 of their last 16 matches finishing below the total points line. Given both sides have struggled in attack recently, this match is likely go below 47.5 total points ($1.90).

Dragons forward Jaydn Su’a is building a case for selection in Queensland’s State of Origin team, and this fixture offers ideal conditions for him to bolster his claim. The hard-running back-rower has scored a try in each of his last three appearances at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, and he will have a golden opportunity to add to that tally when he takes on Raymond Faitala-Mariner on Saturday ($5.20).
