Round 9: Collingwood Magpies v West Coast Eagles match preview

Collingwood is looking to extend their five-match unbeaten streak at Marvel Stadium when they host West Coast in round 9 of the 2024 AFL Premiership Season on Sunday.

In a clash between the 2023 Premiers and the 2023 wooden spooners, the Magpies come in as strong favourites at $1.09 with Unibet, while the Eagles offer a value selection at +650 with Bet365. The handicap is set at -40.5.

Last Friday, the the Magpies produced an impressive performance as they beat their old rival Carlton by six points. In a back-and-forth game, the Magpies trailed by as much as 19 points in the second quarter, before Nick Daicos stole the show as he kicked the match-winning goal with under two minutes to play.

After starting the season 0-3, the Magpies appear back to their best, climbing up to ninth on the ladder with wins against multiple top-eight teams.

A side tipped to struggle in 2024, the Eagles have already exceeded many expectations with their two wins. While they aren’t going to challenge for finals this season, expect them to give plenty of sides a scare.

On the injury front, the Eagles have also been forced to make three changes as Elliot Yeo (groin), Jake Waterman (concussion) and Noah Long (knee) are all unavailable. Twenty-year-old forward Tyrell Dewar has been named to debut, while experienced players such as Andrew Gaff and Jayden Hunt are also a chance of returning.

With the Magpies coming in as such strong favourites, it is hard to see the Eagles pulling off an upset on the road in Melbourne. Missing their leading goal scorer Jake Waterman, their forward line may struggle which suggests that taking the in-form Magpies with the handicap of -40.5 is the value pick with the -109.89 with top AFL bookmakers.

With injuries hitting the Magpies forward line, the responsibility now falls onto players such as Bobby Hill to lift their output.
