Daysee Doom on track for Tatt’s Tiara

Coolmore Classic winner Daysee Doom has run 2nd in a barrier trial ahead of the Tatt’s Tiara.

Daysee Doom has breezed through her only pre-race hit out for the Group One Tatt’s Tiara to indicate she is ready for her first trip to Brisbane.

Trainer Ron Quinton was satisfied after regular jockey Andrew Adkins put the five-year-old mare through her paces in a 1200m-barrier trial at Randwick on Tuesday.

Daysee Doom finished 4-3/4 lengths second to Faraway Town but the margin was inconsequential with Quinton preparing her for the $500,000 feature for fillies and mares over 1350m at Doomben on Saturday week, the final Group One race of the season.

“It was just like a nice bit of work. It was almost run like a race. The winner had a good hit-out,” Quinton said.

“We don’t need to train the hell out of her because she’s a busy mare all the time. She doesn’t need to be over-grinded.”

Quinton said Daysee Doom retained residual fitness from her last campaign, which ended when she was unplaced in the Group One Queen Of The Turf (1600m) at Randwick on April 14.

“She only had two weeks off after the race so she’s basically lost nothing really,” he said.

“She’ll be one of the only Group One winners in it but it’s going to be a hot race.”

Daysee Doom won her first Group One trophy in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill in March and although she failed in the Queen Of The Turf, Quinton always had the Tatt’s Tiara in mind.

“When we got to the end of the last prep we decided all going well we’d give it a crack. The 1350 (metres) at Doomben should be ideal for her.”

Daysee Doom has fashioned an impressive first-up record with two wins and two placings.

Quinton has one runner at Rosehill on Saturday, when five-year-old gelding Imanui races for the first time since September in a Benchmark 80 Handicap (1300m).

“We always race him in a short race first-up because he races well fresh. He’ll step up in distance after that,” Quinton said.
