Cradle Mountain upgraded after top effort

Trainer Clare Cunningham can aim higher with Cradle Mountain after the gelding won with ease on metropolitan debut at Randwick.

The four-year-old produced the most emphatic margin of victory at the Anzac Day meeting with a front-running performance in the Beersheba Handicap (1200m).

A $4000 purchase at the Scone yearling sales in 2015, Cradle Mountain, the $1.80 favourite, has earned prize money of $78, 670 after recording his fourth win from six starts.

Cunningham’s partner Jason Collett powered Cradle Mountain to the line, 3-1/2 lengths clear of Oxford Magic ($18). Smart Edge ($9.50) was a half-length third.

“The horse does the talking for me, I can’t really say much more,” she said.

“He’s a pleasure to have in the stable, he loves to free roll which makes our life a lot easier, he can create his own luck.”

Cunningham, who has 18 wins this season at a strike rate of 24.32 per cent, said she would not get ahead of herself with the second horse to join her stable.
