Round 24 of the 2022 NRL Premiership kicks off in Brisbane this Thursday night as the Broncos host the Parramatta Eels at Suncorp Stadium.
The Broncos have lost three of their last four matches – against the Tigers, Roosters and Storm – as they stumble their way to September. The Eels, on the other hand, have won three of their last four as they build towards the finals, where some experts have them tipped to be premiership contenders.
This match is a milestone game for Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds as he plays his 250th first-grade match, which will be his 19th for the Broncos. Will the home team stand up and deliver their captain a win on the night, or will the Eels solidify their spot in the top four with a crucial away win?
The Broncos have made one change after their thumping at the hands of the Storm, dropping Delouise Hoeter to the reserves and recalling Brenko Lee to the left edge with Corey Oates. Kurt Capewell has been named to start, overcoming an ankle sprain sustained in the match against the Storm; however, Zac Hosking has been named in the reserves as possible cover. The Eels have named an unchanged lineup to the one that belted the Bulldogs 42 points to six.
The Broncos have faced the Eels on 47 occasions and beaten them only 22 times, with the last match falling the Brisbane’s way in Parramatta. The Eels will be out for revenge, while the Broncos have plenty to play for given they risk slipping out of the top eight with only one round remaining. Brisbane will also want to make amends for the disappointing loss last week in what was their “Members’ Round”.

The Eels lose more games than they win at Suncorp, and with the Broncos having their backs against the wall, it won’t be easy for Parra to get the win they desperately need. In a must-win game for the Broncos, the $2.30 at Marantelli Bet is a great head-to-head price.
The return of Brenko Lee for the Broncos will be a huge addition for them defensively and, more importantly, in attack. Lee is not the type of player looking to score tries; rather, he will play his role to the best of his ability for those around him. This couldn’t be more evident in the recent success of Oates, who has had one of the best seasons of his career. The Eels concede more tries in their right defensive corner than anywhere on the park. Will Penisini and Waqa Blake will have their hands full stopping Oates, who looks good value at $5.40 to score two or more tries.
Reynolds will be playing his 250th career game in front of the Broncos faithful having dragged the illustrious club from the depths of despair to lead them to, at points in this season, the top four on the NRL ladder. The former Rabbitoh has reinvigorated his running and short-kicking game, finding the in-goal area more than recent years and scoring tries when it matters most. Reynolds got one in round 19 against the Eels and will be looking to do so again Thursday. So many times we see milestone games rewarded with tries for those celebrating, and Reynolds is a great value play at $4.40 to score at any time in the match.
Key matchup: Payne Haas vs Reagan Campbell-Gillard
The battle of these two NSW State of Origin forwards will be one to watch, as they are the alpha males and leaders of their forward packs going head-to-head. Both players have the ability to throw short passes for forwards next to them or halves out the back, but are better known for their pure strength and brutality to bend defensive lines and put their team on the front foot. Whichever of these two men does it better will be the one to lead his side to a win.
