Italy’s Matteo Berrettini takes on home hope Taylor Fritz in what is shaping up to be one of the matches of the second round at the US Open in New York on Thursday (AEST).
Berrettini is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the US Open draw this fortnight.
The former world No.6 has missed a good chunk of the past 12 months due to injury but has hit the ground running since returning to the ATP Tour. Since the beginning of the European clay court swing, he has played 10 events, making the final of half and winning three.
That’s some record – no wonder he has been holding the 10th line of betting at tennis bookmakers heading into New York.
Berrettini also has a strong record at the US Open, having made it deep three times (one semi-final and two quarter-finals) since 2019.
In his opening round this year, he wasted no time getting past Albert Ramos-Vinolas, dispatching the Spaniard 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-3.
Fritz, on the other hand, is a very solid American play who will enjoy good crowd support in New York.
His record at the US Open is far less impressive – 2023 was the first time he made the second week, in eight attempts.
However, he has made two Grand Slam quarter-finals and a round of 16 across the year’s first three majors, more than Berrettini can say.
This year so far, he is 39-16, with two titles.

Berrettini should win this match, but do not expect it to be straight forward.
Fritz is a very consistent player that rarely takes bad beats. While Berrettini has the weapons, the track record and the form to defeat him, Fritz will not take it lying down.
Both are big servers, so we should see plenty of games played. Expect at least one tiebreak, if not two or three, pushing that total games number well beyond the handicap.
With the fine margins that come from two big servers playing each other, both should have their chances to take a set as well.
Our money is on Berrettini to come out the other side of a tough, three-and-a-half hour clash against Fritz.
