The final group stage matches of the men’s football competition at Tokyo 2020 Olympics are upon us as Australia and Egypt battle it out with a spot in the final eight up for grabs. BettingSite.com.au’s soccer expert presents his best bets and match analysis for the Group C encounter on Wednesday night at Miyagi Stadium.
Australia vs Egypt match preview
Following their 2-0 Matchday 1 win over Argentina, Australia came up against a Spanish side that started six of the 11 who took part in the Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy. Despite falling 1-0 to their more fancied rivals, the Olyroos can derive plenty of confidence from their performance against one of the title hopes.
Australia’s hopes of progression are firmly in their own hands, with a win enough to secure their progression to the knockout stages. Despite failing to register a shot on target against Spain, their defence stood firm before an 81st-minute goal from Mikel Oyarzabal broke the hearts of Olyroos fans and players alike. Graham Arnold’s men will be without the key duo of Riley McGree and Mitchell Duke for Wednesday’s clash with both men picking up suspensions from the Spain game, but if the Aussies bring the same effort that saw them upset Argentina, it is hard to see how they don’t salute as $2.55 favourites with soccer bookmakers.

Despite Egypt struggling to find the back of the net at the Olympics thus far, their defence has been resolute, conceding just the one goal in two games thus far. Like the Australians, Egypt have only selected the one over-age player for this under-23s tournament despite having Premier League duo Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny available.
With no goals and just three shots on target to date in the tournament, the Egyptians will need a sharp form reversal to have any chance of beating the Aussies. Considering how strong they have been in defence against higher-ranked opponents, this Egypt side is more than capable of producing a surprise, despite online bookmakers wanting to take them on as $2.88 outsiders in win-draw-win markets.
Australia v Egypt predictions & best bets
Correct score: Australia 1-0
The Olyroos simply need a win to progress to the final eight at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite Duke and McGree being unavailable, the Aussies have enough talent at their disposal to defeat Egypt in what could be a dour affair. We anticipate one of Daniel Arzani or Lachlan Wales will find the back of the net in the second half and help the Aussies progress to the knockout stages.
Australia 1-0
Half-time correct score: Draw 0-0
With a spot in the final eight up for grabs for both sides, the first half is shaping to be very much a feeling-out process. With only two goals scored between these sides in four games combined, this is going to be the furthest thing from a shootout. A 0-0 scoreline at half-time looks likely.
0-0 at half-time
