AFLW Round 5 odds, betting tips & market news

Women's AFL

Just when we thought the AFLW season was beginning to settle into a predictable pattern, round four came and shook it up again with even more upsets than the week prior and more movement in the premiership race. Following the trend of the last fortnight, we think round five will bring its fair share of surprises. Here’s a look at the latest AFLW Premiership betting odds and the best bets for this week’s action.

AFLW Round 5 betting odds & predictions

Geelong Cats $2.66 vs Richmond Tigers $1.46
The AFLW officials have been crafting the weekly fixtures in the fairest way possible, trying to put together the winless teams, which was the case again in round five. The Cats have showed minimal connection from midfield to the forwards this season, while Richmond nearly knocked off Carlton last week. This is the match where the Tigers should finally secure their first AFLW victory.

Western Bulldogs $1.22 vs GWS Giants $4.15
The Western Bulldogs have won their last three matches and will look for a fourth against the Giants. Although GWS kicked seven goals last week, we see the Dogs winning this match easily. Ellie Blackburn has the power to beat Alyce Parker in the midfield, which would effectively shut down GWS.

Fremantle Dockers $1.45 vs Brisbane Lions $2.69
Two of the best teams in the AFLW will face off in Perth when the Dockers host the Lions, a match where both teams will be left battered and bruised. Although it took Fremantle a half of footy to warm up against the Suns, the Dockers stormed home to win by more than 50 points. Freo are almost impossible to beat on their home deck.

North Melbourne Kangaroos $1.37 vs Carlton $3.02
Carlton’s Madison Prespakis won the AFLW 2020 Best and Fairest award in just her second season, but a dangerous tackle has seen her suspended for this game. Even if the young star appeals and avoids the ban, the Blues will still be big outsiders here. The Roos need to bounce back after their first ever goalless match, and they should do it with ease this week.

Adelaide Crows $1.16 vs St Kilda Saints $5
Adealide’s midfield trio of Ebony Marinoff, Anne Hatchard and Erin Phillips are leaving opposition teams in ruins. Phillips pushed forward last week and kicked four goals to go along with her 21 touches and eight marks in a flawless performance. Even an in-form Saints lineup won’t have the firepower to deal with the rampaging Crows.

Adelaide -19.5

Collingwood Magpies $1.50 vs Melbourne Demons $2.54
Collingwood’s stocks are rising by the minute, but a determined Melbourne outfit could cause an upset here. Kate Hore was a late change for the Dees last week, and without the accurate forward they kicked two goals and 12 behinds. She will return against the Pies and could help the Demons to their third straight win against the Pies, who are looking to break their three-year drought in a tight contest.

West Coast Eagles $1.49 vs Gold Coast Suns $2.57
These two teams are nowhere near ready to compete with the better AFLW sides, but they could provide a great contest against each other. The Eagles have recently struggled to run out their matches, while the Suns need help in the midfield. Do not expect a comprehensive win either way, but the Eagles at home should get the job done.

AFLW Premiership 2021 market update

This has easily been the most active week when it comes to the 2021 AFLW Premiership markets at online bookmakers, as three big upsets occurred at the top end of the ladder. The Magpies moved into $6 following their excellent win over the Kangaroos, who drifted from $4.33 out to $6.50. Adelaide came from $6 into $5 after dealing the Lions their first loss of the season, with Brisbane edging out half a point to $7.50. After winning three straight games, the Western Bulldogs are inside the top six and paying $17 for the flag, down from $26 at the end of round three.
