Adelaide v Sydney AFL R23 match preview

In another crucial match in the fight for AFL finals positions, the Sydney Swans travel to Adelaide Oval on Saturday night to face the Crows.

Last weekend, the Adelaide Crows faced the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba, going down by six points in a back-and-forth clash. Leading by one point at half-time, the Crows allowed the Lions to kick seven goals in the third quarter and couldn’t claw it back. This one will feel like a missed opportunity for the Crows, who kicked 13.15 to the Lions’ 15.9.

In order to make the top eight, Adelaide now need to win both of their remaining matches while relying on other results to go their way. With a very winnable game against the last-placed West Coast Eagles in round 24, this weekend’s matchup might be the most important of the year for the Crows.

The Sydney Swans hosted the Gold Coast Suns last weekend, winning by 24 points thanks to an impressive second-half performance. Trailing at both the quarter-time and half-time intervals, Sydney kicked nine goals to four in the second half and showed great accuracy in front of goal, kicking 18.6 for the match. Chad Warner led the way with 28 disposals and two goals, while Will Hayward kicked four of his own.

That extended the Swans’ win streak to five in a row, pushing them into the eight for the first time since round five. Needing to win both remaining matches to guarantee finals, but likely to make it with one win, the Swans will need to continue to defy the odds.

Breakout defender Mitch Hinge injured his knee against the Lions and is likely to miss this weekend. However, small forward Izak Rankine is expected to return from a hamstring injury, while Josh Rachele may also return to the line-up after starting as the sub last week.

Key forward Joel Amartey reported hamstring tightness after last weekend’s match and may miss the trip to Adelaide, with mid-season recruit Jack Buller the likely replacement after impressing in the VFL. Braeden Campbell will return from suspension, while captain Dane Rampe is expected to return from a calf injury, with Dylan Stephens and Aaron Francis expected to make way.

Adelaide v Sydney AFL R23 betting strategy

The Crows’ record at home this year is 9-3, with only one of their wins coming on the road. However, the Swans haven’t lost to the Crows at Adelaide Oval since 2016 and have won the last three matches between the sides.

The Crows backline is extremely inexperienced, as their five defenders over 190cm have played less than 50 games between them. With the height of the Swans forward line, the Adelaide defence could struggle. Sydney’s last four games have gone over the total points line, and we are expecting this one to go over 172.5 points.

Since round 18, the Swans have had to win all their remaining matches to guarantee finals football. We like the Swans to continue their golden run with a win as $2.55 underdogs with Neds.

With two goals in each of his last four games, Sydney forward Isaac Heeney’s form has coincided with the winning streak. A matchup nightmare, the 2022 All-Australian plays much taller than 185cm while also being extremely skilful below his knees. We like him to continue his good form by kicking two or more goals at $2.25 with the best AFL bookmakers.

Adelaide key forward Taylor Walker looks set for his maiden All-Australian nod in a career-best season. Sitting second in the Coleman Medal race with 65 goals, Walker has been a threat all season. Walker is unstoppable on the lead and can finish anywhere within 60 metres, while he is also very accurate in front of goal.

Tasked with the opposition’s best tall forward each week, Tom McCartin faces a big challenge against Walker. An excellent spoiler, McCartin will be looking to hold Walker in the contest while relying on help from teammates. Keeping Walker quiet will go a long way towards the Swans causing an upset.
