Round 18 of the 2019 AFL Premiership season has plenty of must-watch games, but Saturday’s clash between the GWS Giants and the Collingwood Magpies could be the biggest of the lot.
The match odds at Sportsbet.com.au are almost dead even, with the Giants ($1.85) slightly favoured at home over the Pies ($1.95).
The big question is whether either side will be able to field a competitive team, as both have experienced a worrying amount of injuries in the past month.
GWS losing Stephen Coniglio to a knee injury added more salt to a gaping wound, with the likes of Josh Kelly (calf) and Matt de Boer (shoulder) still several weeks away.
Not only did the Magpies lose All-Australian contender Darcy Moore to yet another hamstring injury, they will also have to sweat on skipper Scott Pendlebury passing a fitness test after he underwent finger surgery last weekend.
The last match between these 2019 premiership contenders was the famous semi-final last season, where the Pies were victorious by only 10 points.
Coniglio was enormous last time these sides met, having 30 disposals, six tackles, seven marks and two crucial goals, so his absence could have a big impact.
GWS Giants vs Collingwood Round 18 player disposals odds
Tim Taranto to get 30 disposals @ $2.10 with Sportsbet
With both Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio on the sidelines for GWS, another midfielder has to fill the void. Taranto has been exceptional in his third year of footy, averaging 28 disposals across the season. The Pies will back in their midfield, but Taranto will win his fair share of contests.
Brodie Grundy to get 25 disposals @ $2.50
With Shane Mumford returning from a knee injury, this is the time for the Pies to take advantage. Mumford is not the fittest and certainly not the most skilled, so a ruckman with the ability of Grundy will have a great time running him around the ground and collecting plenty of disposals.

Giants vs Magpies Round 18 goalkicking tips
Harry Himmelberg to kick two goals – Best odds at Ladbrokes
With Darcy Moore out for the Pies, one of the Giants’ big forwards needs to stand up and kick a few goals. Himmelberg has never shone quite as brightly as Jeremy Cameron, who is having a ripper year, but the Wagga Wagga native is a valuable contributor who will do his bit as usual this weekend.
GWS Giants vs Collingwood Round 18 tri-bet odds
Either team by less than 15 points @ $2.40
The Giants and the Pies have already had several close encounters in their short rivalry, and we can’t see this one blowing out too far either way. It will be another nail-biter that goes down to the last few minutes, with no more than a couple of goals separating the two.
Giants vs Magpies Round 18 match betting
Match result: Collingwood Magpies to win @ $1.95 with Sportsbet
Line betting: Collingwood Magpies +1.5 @ $1.90
The Pies were able to overcome numerous obstacles to beat West Coast in Perth last week, which will fill the team with confidence for the rest of 2019. GWS will put up a fight, but they’ll fall just short with so many guns out injured.
