Winx to get better after Apollo: Waller

Champion Winx has enjoyed a morning in the sun after her 30th consecutive win in the Apollo Stakes.

Winx’s powers of recovery are those of a supreme athlete and as champions do, she has been out and about a day after her winning return to the track in the Apollo Stakes.

On Sunday, Chris Waller Racing posted a picture on Twitter to let everyone see how well she looked 24 hours after her 30th consecutive win.

Winx made it look easy as she ambled past the always gallant Happy Clapper in Saturday’s Apollo but the race record time said she had made some effort.

Waller and her jockey Hugh Bowman know she can cover the last 600 metres of her races faster than any other horse and she has proven that at least the last 30 times she has stepped out on the track.

After running at Randwick, Winx went home to Rosehill where she and her stablemates who had also raced, were given an ice bath as part of their recovery routine.

“She’s pulled up well. It was a pretty straightforward afternoon for her,” Waller told Sky Sports Radio.

“The ice bath is for recovery. All our runners get treated the same.

“They do it on a treadmill up to their waist in salt water chilled to six degrees for eight to ten minutes.”

Her powers of recovery are better than most and it’s now on to the next assignment, the Chipping Norton Stakes, the first of three planned Group One races before she is retired in April.

And Waller wants nothing more than for her to win all three.

“I feel a sense of responsibility,” he said.

“A lot of people jumped on Winx because of her winning run.

“I don’t think they could comprehend her getting beaten.”

“We’ll worry about when it comes, if it comes, but hopefully we can draw the curtain on a very illustrious career without ever worrying about it.”

Waller expects Winx to take benefit from Saturday’s race which is a scary thought for rival trainers.

“She will take natural improvement,” he said.

“It will bring her on and she will go forward in a big way.”
