Winx co-owner marvels at super racemare

Richard Treweeke had every reason to be giddy when Winx scaled even greater heights.

One of the remarkable mare’s three owners, Treweeke struggles with vertigo.

But the 86-year-old stood firm at Randwick on Saturday after Winx racked up her 17th win in a row in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

“I haven’t been a hundred per cent,” Treweeke confided, before joining fellow owners Debbie Kepitis and Peter Tighe for a commemorative photo.

“I’m very happy and lucky that I’ve been here today. I saw a great win.”

Treweeke, who has owned horses for more than half a century, rarely ventures to the track these days but when Winx is involved you eventually make an exception.

“It’s a dream, you don’t have horses like this very often,” he said.

“She could be the best horse we’ve ever had in this country. It’s up for debate of course, but she’s one of the greats of all time.”

Treweeke said he sensed Winx was something special when she finished second to Gust Of Wind Australian Oaks two years ago.

Joao Moreira’s ride at Randwick that day still grated as Hugh Bowman guided Winx back to the winners’ stall.

“Don’t they get on great together,” he smiled, before turning serious when an offshore campaign was floated.

“I wouldn’t like to see her go overseas,” he said.

“They can come to her.”
