Winning riders suspended at Sandown

Mark Zahra will ride on the second day of The Championships in Sydney before beginning an eight-meeting suspension.

Zahra has Group One bookings on Harlow Gold in the Australian Oaks and Jessy Belle in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Randwick on Saturday but will miss the following week where he had potential rides in the All Aged Stakes and Champagne Stakes.

Zahra won aboard Merchant Navy at Sandown on Wednesday bur was outed for careless riding on Mrs Martin at the meeting.

His ban starts after Saturday and he can return on April 17.

Apprentices Beau Mertens and Jordan Childs each rode a double at Sandown but also copped careless riding bans.

Mertens’ two winners moved him to 48 for the season and second on the premiership ladder, six behind Craig Williams.

Mertens was outed on a careless riding charge after winning on Single Note and will be out after Saturday until April 16.

It was the apprentices first suspension since August last year.

Childs received two seven meeting bans, to be served concurrently, following careless riding charges on Sammy The Snake.

Like Mertens, Childs begins his suspension after riding in Adelaide on Saturday before resuming on April 16.

Childs also has an excellent record. He was suspended at Seymour in February while his previous ban was in January 2016.
