What the Twitterverse had to say about NRL Round 7

NRL twitter
THE top four remains unchanged after the pacesetters took home the chockies over the Easter weekend in round seven of NRL 2017.

St George-Illawarra’s remarkable run continued with their win over North Queensland Cowboys, while Melbourne, Cronulla and Sydney all picked up victories.

The biggest movers were the Canterbury Bulldogs, who vaulted into the top eight with their 24-9 result over the Rabbitohs.

It was a very long weekend indeed for Penrith Panthers, now only three places from the foot of the table after copping their fifth defeat in seven outings.

Let’s see how the Twittersphere reacted.

Very Good Friday for Bulldogs, Broncos and Roosters

Josh Reynolds was the hero in Canterbury’s win over the Bunnies, earning praise from pundits and punters alike.

There was much less love for the Burgess boys at South Sydney, despite some strong efforts late in the piece.

Inspired by the outstanding Luke Keary, the Roosters bounced back from consecutive defeats with a big win up at Newcastle.

Yet it was the Knights fans who drew the bulk of the praise on social media, with over 21,000 turning out to see a team that appears destined for another wooden spoon.

Things were much tighter north of the border, where Brisbane had to work right to the wire for their 24-22 derby victory over the Gold Coast.

The overwhelming sentiment among fans and media was that the Broncos were lucky to walk away with two points, although the Titans only have themselves to blame for costly bloopers such as this beauty:

Dragons and Storm keep pace as Raiders run riot

Having leapfrogged Melbourne into top spot last weekend, St George-Illawarra continued their incredible early charge with a 28-22 victory over North Queensland.

The Dragons were slated as Newcastle’s biggest rival for the wooden spoon in the pre-season predictions, but it has now become impossible to write them off as anything but genuine premiership contenders.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, are only just hanging onto a spot in the eight after copping back-to-back losses.

The Storm returned to winning ways at Brookvale, although Craig Bellamy would be less than pleased with his charges’ all-round efforts.

Leading 30-16 at the break, the visitors were kept pointless in the second half as Manly came within five points of what would have been an incredible comeback win.

It was an old-fashioned shootout in many respects, but not all the pundits on Twitter were especially impressed with either side’s tactical approach.

The Raiders kept pressure on the leading pack with a resounding 20-8 win over New Zealand Warriors, the highlight of which was undoubtedly this incredible defensive effort from Jarryd Crocker:

Viewers were decidedly less enamoured with the efforts of Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach on the Fox Sports commentary panel.

Up up the Sharks, down down the Panthers

Penrith were supposed to challenging for the flag this year, but all evidence to date suggests they will be nearer the other end of the ladder by season’s end.

The Panthers failed to even cross the line at Pepper Stadium on Easter Sunday as Cronulla-Sutherland, who held the Storm tryless the week prior, waltzed to a 28-2 victory.

It would appear the Twittersphere has had quite enough of Penrith’s general manager, Phil Gould, not least due to his favoured ploy of packing up all social media accounts and heading for the hills when things go awry.
