West Indies v South Africa preview
With a place in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals on the line, the West Indies host South Africa on Sunday morning in Antigua for their final Super Eights clash
An incredibly close contest is expected, as top cricket bookmakers can barely split the sides. The West Indies with the home advantage come in as slight favourites at -111.11 with Bet365, while South Africa are at -106.38 with BoomBet.
On Friday night, the West Indies secured their first win of the Super Eights as they beat the USA by nine wickets. After bowling the Americans out for just 128, it took the Windies just 10.5 overs to chase down the total, which secured a vital net run rate (NRR) boost. Andre Russell and Roston Chase each took three wickets, while Shai Hope scored 82* off just 39 balls.
They can secure a place in the semi-finals with a win in this clash, but bookies are keeping them safe, giving them odds of +650 to lift the trophy.
South Africa secured a vital win on Friday as well, beating England by seven runs. Batting first, it was Quinton de Kock (65 runs) and David Miller (43 runs) who did most of the damage as the Proteas set a total of 6-163. In the second innings, regular wickets kept England below the required run rate, as they ultimately fell just short.
Still unbeaten throughout this World Cup, South Africa is in prime position to make the semi-finals. However, with a poor NRR they are at risk of dropping out of the top two if they lose, as England are expected to secure a strong win over the USA.
West Indies v South Africa predictions
In a sudden-death matchup, this is set to be the biggest match of the World Cup so far.
While the Proteas are unbeaten in this World Cup, they are yet to put together a dominant performance. On the other hand, the West Indies have shown throughout the tournament how explosive their batting lineup is. With home conditions, it is hard to look past the West Indies in this clash at -111.11.
With scores of 65 and 74 in his last two matches, opener Quinton de Kock is the most dangerous option in the South African batting lineup. The left-hander has an excellent history against the West Indies, averaging over 40 at a strike rate of 150. With their place in the tournament on the line, back the veteran to put together a solid innings, scoring 30+ runs at +100.
For the West Indies, wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran has been in excellent form as the World Cup’s leading run scorer with 227 runs. Going at a strike rate of 148, the 28-year-old is excellent against both pace and spin. He has gotten over 20 runs in all but one inning in this World Cup, so back Pooran to continue his excellent form with 30+ runs at -111.11.
