Waugh sticks to winning ways

Trainer Kim Waugh is hoping to secure another Queensland win when Supreme Effort runs at Caloundra.

NSW trainer Kim Waugh is sticking to a successful formula with Supreme Effort who makes his Queensland debut at the Sunshine Coast.

Waugh, who trains at Wyong on the Central Coast, has been a regular visitor to Queensland for more than two decades, winning several stakes races, but recently she has been making lightning visits with open company horses.

Her latest visitor, Oxford Poet, won at Doomben in late July after making a quick trip north and returning home the next day.

Damian Browne rode Oxford Poet to win and Waugh has again secured him for Supreme Effort in Saturday’s open handicap over 1200 metres.

“Damian is a top rider anywhere but has a reputation for being outstanding at the Sunshine Coast. I was glad to get him,” Waugh said.

Supreme Effort is gradually working his way back into form after almost a year out of the winners’ circle.

His seven wins include a victory in a NSW Provincial Championship heat at Wyong last year but he finished unplaced in the final at Randwick.

It will be Supreme Effort’s second interstate trip after he travelled to Flemington on Victoria Derby Day last year and finished third to Flippant in a Listed race on the straight 1200m-course.

“He got a few little niggling problems from running on rock-hard tracks earlier this year so we gave him a good break,” Waugh said.

“He has finished close up at his two runs from a spell at Rosehill and I am pleased with him.

“The Sunshine Coast run fits in with his campaign and he will head straight home on Sunday,.”

She will then look at Sydney races for the gelding in the spring.

Browne has been dominant at the Sunshine Coast for the past seven years and is closing in on a milestone 200 winners on the grass track.

He has also ridden about 40 winners on the cushion track.
